Not to nulify fellow Tradganger help but...
« on: December 16, 2010, 07:56:00 PM »
I had a post about my 2011 setup, and it involves using Snuffers vs WW as well! I took your advice to heart, but upon looking through my stash of broadheads(im a broadhead junkie), i have over a dozen of the 165gr Ace Super Express broadheads!!! I think i will go that route boys and girls! Anyone with any tricks on sharpening them, i use a file and get a good ridgid edge that just grabs and tears at tissue and arteries/veins and leaves good bloodtrails, anyone with additional advice, or is that edge adequate?

Ace broadheads are as tough as they come. I think there is a sharpening tutorial in the How-To forum by Charlie Lamb. He shows how to sharpen with a file, then when done he draws the file down the edge with the corner of the file. I tried it and it makes for an awesome edge. It was either in the How-To, or the TradGang video, can't remember which. Anyway, the Ace should be perfect to file sharpen. Good Luck with them!

I use a block sharpener for my ACE heads,It is a two file affair with the files screwed to a block of wood with a "V" notch routed in the wood. After I get a full contact pass made on both sides of the head, using lighter presure as I progress, I will make a few passes on my leather stop and that will pop hairs just fine.
Good luck.

The head i have doesnt have the double or triple lam beefed up tip! Its calles the 165gr Super Express, a longer and wider head, but not by much than than the Ace Originals! Ive always been fond of the Fred Bear Edge, anybody have any issues with that?

The Ace heads are good steel and will work with either type edge.  I prefer a honed edge, but that is just my preference.  I set the edge with a file, hone it with a good set of crock sticks and finish with a strop.

Just put Ace 160's on some heavier wood arrows & really love them. Plenty of total weight & no significant speed loss from my heavier bows. The BH's are very easy to get razor sharp w/my grinder & honing wheels.

As far a Fred Bear edge.., whatever works. IMO razor sharp is way better. Less friction means better penetration. A complete passthrough the boiler room makes trailing easy.

Funny, but I can't remember ever seeing a custom knife with the Fred Bear Edge on it. Must of missed it somehow.

If I'm not mistaken the Fred Bear edge straitera is referring to only relates to broadheads.

There are at least a couple of trains of thought on what makes for the best edge on a broadhead.

The ragged edged that is left by just using a file, a kind of serrated edge.

One other is the surgical edge which is a smoother yet very sharp edge.

Forrest if I'm off base please set me straitera ..lol

I agree with Straitera,In 2000-2001 I shot a buck and a doe,one week apart, same tree. The buck had a file sharp cheetah(by Elberg), poor blood trail despite a good shot.Tight behind the shoulder, hole on both sides about mid-way up. The doe had a great bloodtrail with a lesser hit but a razor sharp head. This sold me on what I wanted for sharp. YES, a filed edge will work but if I have the time,I will hone them to a razor.

Why is it referred to as a Fred Bear edge??  I thought I read about Howard Hill using this method in Hunting the hard way....I know Fred was a master promoter but shouldn't it be a Howard Hill edge??????

525gr German Pine arrow, 165gr Ace Express broadhead(SHARP), total arrow weight of 690gr with about 14-15% FOC! Should be a helluva penetrator!!!

I have also heard that the honed scalpel like edge causes the animal to not run as far out of fear. Less painful wound I guess. Absolutely no way to back that up though.
