shrew and arrow spine

Hey gang,
   I'm "toying" around with a super shrew deluxe 58" 55#@28", and I'm drawing right about 28".  I'm trying to get some carbons to fly out of it.  Right now I'm shooting a 30" Axis 400 w/ a 100gr brass insert and 125gr tip, although they aren't flying that bad they seem stiff.  I was thinking maybe I need a 500 spine axis, or 3555 gold tip with a similar insert and tip.  Can anyone save me some leg work and put me in the ballpark of what has worked for them?  Thanks fellas.

I plug in your data to Stu's calculator and get a near perfect match with your Easton Axis 400's setup as they are. I used 1.5" for a footing length for your 100 grain inserts.

Go Heavy I had a shrew and it Loved Heavy arrows. My Arrow weight was like 700plus grn.

I have a similar bow, 2 lbs less at my draw (27") and shoot vapor carbonwood 3000s, 30" with 100 gr inserts and 145 gr points or CX Heritage 150s, 28.5" with 50 gr inserts and 145 gr points and both fly great.  Total arrow wt for both is about 525 gr.

Yeah I figured those arrows would be almost spot on, just seems like they want to kick right a little.  Maybe I'll throw a little more weight up front.  Thanks guys.

My Scout is 55lbs and I draw it right at 53lbs. Shoots Carbon Express 150's with 175 tips well. My arrows are about 28.5" long. My woodies are 65-70's. Most Shrews like about 15lb heavier spine than they are marked according to Ron himself. I tried some 60-65's with 160 tips and almost had to cut them too short to get them stiff enough.

I have 2 Shrews in the Poundage you mentioned. I Shoot Gold tip 5575 out of both with a 100 gr insert and they fly great with a 100-125 gr. point on the end.

What did you enter into Stu's Calc. for the center-shot measurement? Regardless of what the calc. results are, if you don't enter the correct measurement of center-cut/shot you ain't gonna get the right answers. It's the single most critical entry into the calc. that I have found. Oh, and don't forget to allow for the shelf material that's added onto the strike/side plate.

Many people just give up and say the calculator doesn't work when it's usually because they don't enter the exact measurement for center-cut.

I'm shooting a [email protected] inch draw Super Shrew with 30.5 inch BOP Easton Axis 400 and they're flying great with 200 grain points.

I used 1/8" from center as Gregg told me that's what he cuts all Shrews to unless the customer specifies otherwise. The 1/8" measurement includes shelf material so im guessing the cut on wood is more like 1/16" or 3/32" from center?  I know for my 54" classic hunter Stus calc worked perfect for me when figuring out the correct arrow.

With the 400 Axis arrows you are using right now, try going up in tip weight 145, 175, 200, 250 even 300 grains and see what happens?  You will be reducing the dynamic spine and be observing the extremes range of what these arrows might do through this particular bow.  I also have a 58” Super Shrew Deluxe 56#@27" and shoot Axis 400's through it at 28.5" BOP to trough of nock.  There are too many things to play with to say whether it will improve your arrow flight or not, by changing the point weight, but it is a good starting point.  Work with nock height, brace height, silencing location, your release technique and follow through, fletch size (number and configuration), etc. This is a never ending process in my IMO and a passion for me.

I would personally stick with the 400's, you should be able to get close to perfect flight with these and they are a stronger shaft than the 500's, hence more durable.

Had a 52# 60" Super Shrew.  Shot Gold Tip 3555 arrows cut to 29".  The tip was 125 grns with a 50 grn weight plus insert.  Five inch shield cut feathers.  I believe the arrow worked out to be 9gpp.  They shot like darts.  Did a Robin Hood with them in my basement at 15 yds with the third arrow shot.  Tried 5575s, they were too stiff with same length and weight up front.

I have a Super Shrew Delux 56@27". I shoot aluminum, Legacy 2216s. I seem to get good arrow flight.

As others have mentioned, I would try 150 or 175 grain points to see if they give you better arrow flight.

I'm shooting a 53@28 Griffin, but pulling 28.5 so I'm pretty close to your specs.  Anyhow, I'm using CX Terminator Select shafts 45/60 w/ 100 gr brass insert, 3-5" shields.  Arrow length with insert is 29-15/16".  With this set-up I can shoot three point weight that will give me arrows weighing 585, 635 and 685 grains For the heavy weight arrows  I'm using 160 point w/ 125 or 100 gr steel adapters.  For the light arrow I use a Al adapter.

But for this bow I mainly use the 685 and 635 gr arrows.  My Griffin will cast these arrow at 165 and 175 fps.
