crown dipping carbon shafts

What kind of paint is good to use to crown dip carbon shafts? I've got some Arrow Dynamics shafts that need to look like real arrows. Can a coat of poly be put over the crown and crest to keep them from smearing? Thanks.

I used Krylon spray paint and testors model paint..  no problem.  I also used a coat of poly on mine and again, no problems...

I tape them up and put on two or three coats of automotive primer, then spray paint with the full gloss color of choice.  Can't remember the brand but the spray paint that's advertised as 2x coat works best.  Full gloss hasn't been a problem for getting fletching tape to stick.

2x is rustoleum. stuff covers like mad...i have used it for ...art...

Any cheap spray enamel. Lightly sand the shaft and tape off. 3 or 4 light coats/

Don't mean to hijack a thread but I've got a couple questions about this. I tried cresting a couple carbons this past week. I taped them off, primed and sprayed with krylon spray paint. I gave them about 36 hours to dry then fletched them with the gorilla super glue. Well the glue dissolved the paint and nothing stuck. So I tried the next one with fletch tite platinum and had the same problem. So any ideas where I went wrong? I realize I can use fletching tape but I dont really want to wait to order it. Do I need to wait longer, use enamel paint, different glue??? Thanks in advance.

Coiloil37... I haven't personally tried this but I would think if you covered the Krylon with a final coat of Poly you should be OK.

What Ken said...  Ya have to put a top coat on.  I use water based spray on poly.  Do this after cresting etc.  Then spray two or three light coats of the poly allowing it to dry overnight.  That should do it.  Then fletch. Ya also might want to try some Duco.. I have not tried these other glues since I use the tape.  Its a compatibility thing....

Ya should order some fletch tape.  You will quit that messy glue.  It sticks to just about any surface save for ice and oil

Had the same experience with Krylon years ago.

Was building some of the early Griz Stick Alaskan arrows for Ed and used a pretty almond Krylon and died some white feathers in onion skins for a pale brown hue. Beautiful combo on his original shafts.

When I glued them feathers on, they stayed unlike yours. But... the glue ate through the krylon, into the finish on the shafts. There was this "edge" on each feather that was a hidious color.

Ed asked if I used "Tabaccy juice" to attach the feathers. It was that ugly.

Might be the Krylon?  Top coating seems like an awful lot of extra work!

The spray minwax polycrylic is "ultra fast" drying. You can re-coat within an hour and a half, otherwise you're supposed to wait 72 hours between coats. It seemed easier than the spray painting.

Someone fletched my spray-painted and poly-ed carbon shafts for me (rather than lend out his Bitz!) so I don't know what adhesive was used for the feathers, but they aren't coming off.

duco works on the regular paint...no poly needed...less you want to.
