« on: January 03, 2011, 11:12:00 PM »
I've seen and heard lots about Freds pullovers, but has anyone tried there Mackinaw ? Is it much heavier and or warmer than his Pullover, just can't decide which one!

I have one and like it bunches.

(I know - normally I would have my back to the tree trunk and not be backlit and silhoueted like that.)

The cape adds a layer and the large hood itself is like two more on the back of your neck even it is folded down.  It is basically the hooded pullover with a slip over short vest/cape that makes the top heavier.  Leave off the cape for one less layer if it warms up.  Arms are single layer and free moving and the top keeps the upper arm away from the bowstring.  Well thought out coat.  (Big handwarmer pockets, too).

I can also recommend Teresa's windblocker vest as an underlayer beneath the Mackinaw.  I have a Polarflece 200 jacket under that (with wool bibs for my legs and torso) and have been toasty sitting for hours at temperatures well below freezing.

The Mackinaw with vest over poly longjohns and the bibs are enough for bunny hunting.

I got a mackinaw with a hood for Christmas.
The mackinaw is a two piece garment, which I did not realize when it was ordered.
There is a tunic part that is like the pullover shirt with no hood that you put on first. This has sleeves and covers your whole torso just like the shirt. You could wear this alone if you wanted to.
Then separately you put on the hood part, which has a hood and then covers your back, shoulders, and chest down to just below your armpits. It has two arm holes that you put your arms through, but it does not have sleeves.
So you end up with a double layer over your shoulders and upper chest and back, and the sleeves move freely through the arm holes.
I found this ease of movement to be real good for shooting a bow, chopping wood, etc.
I have worn mine with a shirt and vest underneath in a drizzle at 25 degrees. I was only out about an hour and a half and I was walking but I was warm and toasty.
I have a Asbell pullover shirt as well and it is real nice, but I think the mackinaw is warmer due to the double layering. Of course I will wind up wearing both of them if it gets cold enough. Hope that helps you. Walt

Interesting.  Mine has the hood attached to the sleeved pullover and the cape is the add-on.  Guess it gets you to the same place.  But I did ask for mine in an unadvertized pattern (Shadow Plaid) for the Mac so I guess that's how she accomplished it.  I didn't realize it was two-piece until it arrived, either.

Steve, another good option is the regular hooded pullover and then the vest without the hood. I wear the hooded pullover walking and then when I am going to sit a while I put the vest on over it all. Doubles the wool on body but still a single layer on arms for easy shooting. Both have the deep handwarmer pockets. I got the "autum sumac" plaid and it blends in nicely here.   Bob

I'm adding one to my "short" list!

First I think I will talk to one of the Asbells' so I'll know in advance the style.

God bless,Mudd

I love my Mac. Its a very functional top at a very fair price. I packed in the cape/hood and put it on at the stand. Just one of the wind block vest, you need to order one of those too.

I just ordered a Mackinaw with the hood. I ordered the gray color. I have 2 questions. Does anyone one know if she uses the same thickness wool on all the different color Mac's?  Second I placed my order last night on the internet, when do you think I will get it? They look really comfortable and warm. From my experience wool is a superior material when dealing with cold conditions.

There is 2 different colors on the Macs in our family and the wool is the same thickness on those.

I've ordered from Teresa 3 times and it normally takes a couple of weeks to get it.

As far as wool thickness that is a question you would have to ask Teresa. Some of the wool comes in different thicknesses.I think it just depends on the pattern available as to how thick the wool was made. She is on top of this and knows the answer.I ordered two from Teresa yesterday.

I called Thresa to order mine because the vest wasn't listed in the colour I wanted. She was very helpful and made up a vest for me in my preferred colur.Took a little longer but I got exactly what I wanted. Seems like it was 3 weeks which isn't unusual living up here in the sticks. Great product and service. A+++.  Bob

The wool Teresa uses can be different weights, depending on the pattern. She tries to be consistant, but if  it is important, just ask her. If you need it to be a little heavier/lighter, she'll let you know your best choices. Teresa's workmanship is second to none and you can't beat her price.
