Great Northern Bows w/ locator grips
« on: January 07, 2011, 05:06:00 PM »
can anyone tell me where to measure the brace from on a GN bow with a locator,,  I have a bush bow that the website says should be  6 3/4 but is it measured from the center of the grip (the hump) or the deepest part of the locator???

also if theres a favorite brace distance for a 62" bushbow post it so i know a good range to play with.

tried to call Jerry but got the machine.

thanks T

I don't have the locator grip. I have the old style grip and I measure mine from the rear of the shelf. I am shooting both of my Bushbows 6 3/4" from the rear of the shelf.

okay so a bush bow locator grip will be 6 3/4 from the deepest part of the grip which is 3/8" deeper than the the standard grip which is also the same 6 3/4"

I'll play with everything but the shelf makes more sense on these bows because it never changes...

thanks for the posts because this is cool hearing the different places you guys measure brace and are still happy with the results.

thanks!

Just got a GN R/D from a friend with a locator grip and the bow shots best for me @ 6.5" from the deepest part of the grip (just played around with it). Don't know if that helps you and or what the difference may be on the bush bow.

The website lists the suggested brace height in the written description about each model of bow.

I have been told that---you measure from the string to the lowest point[position]onthe riser closest to the string. On the locator grip this is the lowest point.  On the standard[broom handled] grip I measure about 5/8th to 3/4 of an inch down from shelf and it is pretty close.

I would measure from edge of shelf.

I just bought a new Great Northern 56" Critter Gitter Special Jack Knife Old School Limited Edition.  I really like it and can not wait to harvest a turkey with it.  Got it about a week ago and have been shooting it at least once a day.
I am going to order another Great Northern Long bow in a target length, probably 62".  Will try to order so I can pick it up at the August Long Bow Shoot at Hastings.
To answer your question I had ask Jerry the same question and he said the deepest part of the locator grip.

personally, I would start at 6 and 3/4 from the deepest point of the grip and raise it until you find what works for you.

Back edge of the shelf makes more sense for longbows offered with various grips.  I've never seen brace heights for various grips published by any bowyer; which would be necessary to comply with the current AMO "rule" that says string to deepest part of the grip.  I'd go with what the bowyer says.

Measure from the deepest part of the grip.  If you are having trouble getting your Bushbow tuned call Jerry.  He really knows that bow and can tell you pretty much exactly where you need to be.

I shoot mine with the index grip 6 3/4" from the deepest part of the grip. It shoots well at this brace height.
