trash silencers?
« on: January 16, 2011, 07:32:00 PM »
My question is this.....when you change out strings,  who is keeping the silencers and reusing them in the new string?  and who throws them in the trash and opts for a fresh pair? (mainly with natural fiber and material silencers)  :archer2:

I think it would be quite challenging to re-use silencer materials.  Skin/fur might work, but still a challenge.  Yarn type material, no way.

I save my old strings pre-set up and stretched in case I nick/cut one mid season on my bow. New string gets new nocks/silencers and bow gets retuned.

All my fir silencers I save and cut down and put them on my kids bows. And I have re-used some for my bows as well.

I take a skein of "WOOL-EASE" yarn, wrap it around a credit card length-ways about 20 times.
remove from card, place it between string sections. install string on limb tips, cut the loop ends, and start shooting. for the cost of the
skein,( $5.00 ) you have silencers for life.

I have re-used beaver and wool, but the rubber ones usually need replacing pretty often, anyway.

I change strings pretty regular and I always put new silencers on. I used to spend alot on musk ox and buffalo wool, but now I just use wool yarn and it works great.

In the past I have swapped out beaver from string to string but anymore I use the rubber (I think there called bug legs you get from the fly fishing stores. Way cheaper then getting from the archery dept.) and discard with the old string. Plus it's easy to replace. Tie a stretched tight knot through the string, cut to length and pull apart.

I'll re-use beaver if I don't have another set handy, but re-used ones don't look as nice a as a fresh set.

I also do what riverrat 2 does. Works great and dirt cheap.

I have also found that you can reuse the fur string silencers or the string leechs, but anything else is history.

Not to change the subject, but I've never experienced this, or heard it from anyone I know.  I've used rubber silencers for years and years, and have never worn a set out. My draw length (30+") and the weights I usually shoot (65+) put any material to the test.  I have shot the hair out of fur before.

I don't try to salvage them--they are plenty cheap enough to put in a new set, and it would be a pain to try and re-use them--but not because they show any sign of wear.
