I found out how to tell when your juuuust close enough!
« on: January 25, 2011, 11:22:00 AM »
When you think you'd be be better off with a knife in your hand due to the possibility of hoof to hand combat!    :knothead:

45 minute stalk turned into a sub 10 yard encounter on my hands and knees with my bow in the wrong hand! (crawling through a tunnel with my bow in the right hand(I release with my right hand)) Then I realized I couldn't just "stand up" to shoot. It took me 10 minutes of fumbling and making what I thought to be TONS of noise before I could get a shot off- ended up being 12 yards and a total miss- shot over piggys back! the shot itself felt great though- smooth, great release, quiet. just about 2" too high!    :D   after the shot the 3 or 4 that I saw ended up being 10-12 total as they all blew out of there after the shot.

give them a few days to cool down and I will go back for more! might keep my knife a little closer this time though-

I feel your pain and know how watching 3 or 4 pigs turns out to be a bunch once you shoot.  Never quite figured that out though.

Now that's exciting! Crawling for pigs makes me worried for snakes & I'm not afraid of snakes. Would cut a new pig trail if I crawled upon one however. Great story.

Hey Ranger, I'm just curious, If you can remember, did you pick a spot or did you look at the whole animal ? I ask because I missed what was probably a once in a lifetime shot at a coyote in Texas in Dec.2010. I realized what I had done right after the shot.

Thanks

I had my shot picked. (low behind the front leg) It was just one of those things. I would be really po'd if I had missed a Yote! These pigs are there, not going any where and I am planning to head back out Thurs evening and shoot one. I shot 60 rounds today going over and over the scenario in my head. Hands and knees, bow handling, etc..... I picked up one thing during my practice today: my right knee needs to swing out as far as possible 90*. That would be prefect to allow me to turn my upper body for a shot- since I am head on in a trail I cant rotate the way I need to to get off a good shot- I was lucky to shoot the way I did yesterday. I dont believe I will be able to shoot like that again.

I do have some pics to share but I gather they are probably familiar to most on here.

hog is 1/3rd of the way down right in the middle- look at the dark line of grass, he is on the left side of that line.

The grass in the background here is almost 6 feet high at the tops!

Get on your hands and knees and CRAWL! (granted it wasnt all like this):

You'll get 'em next time.  Sure your crawling isn't swimming?
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

If I had time, and if I knew 100% what direction they were moving I would have liked to pull out the cell phone and get some pics/ video. the water is deceiving. It is about 6" deep though there are holes where it is 20" or so. If you dont want to get dirty this hunting is not for you.
