Tru angle file
« on: January 27, 2011, 01:36:00 PM »
I have sharpened several broadheads on it since i got it, and what can i say...its great! Very fool proof and i love that, just gotta keep files clean! Ive sharpened 6 Ace Express 165gr to a real sharp/ridgid edge that shaves hair and blows up rubberbands! I have it down to a systen for my Ace's, sharpie edges, 20 "Hard" passes per side, then when a good burr is raised, i actually draw the head the opposite way 10 passes! Its a wicked edge! My only real ? here is... I have some Tusker Aztec 175gr heads i wanna sharpen, and possible use for elk this fall! They just have a slight factory grind on them now, with enough work on the tru angle, will i be able to establish a good edge on these, as well as remove enough metal to get them down into the 160gr(+5-7gr)realm i need for spine?

I agree.  It's great for establishing the initial edge coming off the factory grinds for any number of broadheads.

I tried it on a Tusker Concorde about a yr ago. I didn't have much luck, there is just to much metal to take off on the Concorde. Don't know if the Aztec is the same or not? I'm sure it could be done but I just don't have that much time to do it.

Yeah, i was wondering that myself lookin at the broadheads! I was thinking probably 100 or so passes per side should remove the 15gr that im looking for! After that ill sharpie edges and see what happens! I may use a carbide type pull through sharpener to help remove a little metal initially!

If you use the Tru-Angle stone after the files you can get your heads scary sharp. When you first use the files rub them down real good with chalk. This will prevent "pinning" which is when you get small chunks of metel deep in the teeth. It doesn't hurt to flip the files over once in a while to get the most out of them. I sharpen all my zwickeys with this system and you can shave with any one of them.
