Covey, do the SGH penetrate or impact only. After shooting at Pheas. a few times ,start thinking why it isn't that easy to kill them. At first I thought 58# at close range will blow through but not always so...add in flu flu slowing arrow, the bird flying away, wing hitting arrow, my short draw/crappy release .....lots of things goin' on. The guy I went with only let us use field tips.

The SGH will also penetrate. I have had them pull right back out on several occasions do to the fact that they open up a large wound channel and the back of the talons are rounded. I have never had one go thru a bird and stick out the other end. Only once did an arrow stay in the bird until it hit the ground and that head was deep inside the bird so no danger to the dog. SGH very safe for dogs. I personally have shot at least 2 doz pheas over dogs and have been witness to at least another doz by other hunters (ten years worth) all kinds of heads used and never even come close to hurting a dog. IMHO the biggest danger to the dogs is when you move in for the flush. If your arrow is pointing down and the dog repositions they could run into your tip. In that case even a field tip could cause a serious eye injury.

CORRECTION! I was just reviewing some old footage. I have actually shot two birds that the head remained inside.

That is cool! I am going pheasant hunting for the second time next weekend. I did not get one out of the air last time and hope it happens this time. A longbow pheasant will look REAL good on my living room wall.
Congrats,
Bisch

It's a fine dog that can point a live bird while fetching. Congratulations on your shooting and having a fine pup.
