"What does flat out smokes an arrow mean!!!"

That describes an arrow that flies  "flat out to 20 yards"  and of course "hits like a ton of bricks." ."

It is a bow shooting an arrow at such a high velocity that friction with the atmosphere raises the temperature of the arrow's fletching right up to near kindling temperature. If you were of an inquisitive mind and had access to a chronometer, you would be looking at 175-180 f.p.s. but much higher if the bow's speed was only estimated by it's owner.

It is a subjective term used to describe any bow that a person is either trying to sell or brag about. The term is often deflated or destroyed by the simple use of a chronograph or proper weight hunting arrows.  Slang terms simply can't stand up to facts and science.   :banghead:    :biglaugh:

I have some friends who are fond of saying "It's a hammer".  I also shoot 3-D with a friend with a R/D Morrison and it is not only a hammer it flat out smokes and arrow!  He's never let me shoot it though.

I went to trad archery cause I was tired of thinking about how fast my bow was.  Now with that said I have decided that somewhere between 170 to 180fps is the speed that I tend to shoot well.  So I shoot the heaviest arrow I can that does that speed and flys well.  And with that said my Horne Combo smokes a 660gr arrow out at 189fps!  So far I think all the Horne bows are up there with the fastest out there.

Any bow sending a arrow down range quiet enough to kill a deer before spooking the deer. That is a bow that smokes an arrow or at least smokes a deer. 150 fps is smoking fast. That is 50 yds in one second so if you shoot most deer at 25 yds or less that arrow hits home in 1/2 second or less.   :coffee:    :deadhorse:

'Flat out smokes an arrow' means one of three things: 1) my bow is faster than your bow, 2)I have a new bow I'm bragging about, or 3)I have a bow for sale!   :readit:

All the bows that I have had that "flat out smoked an arrow" I ended up selling, they just didnt seem to shoot consistant for me. Maybe it was the smoke getting in my eyes that caused me not to shoot them too good  :)
What is there, maybe 10 fps that seperates a really fast bow from a average bow?

More like 40 or 50fps.

Fastest thing I ever owned was a Dan Quillion Patriot of 70#@28" I drew to about 29".  It was probably well over 200 or even 210fps with hunting cedars.  It was also LOUD and there was not much seperation between the "KRACK" of the bow and the "Thwack" of the arrow hitting the target.  But I never caught the fletch or nock entering my focus zone and I missed that.  I don't look at the arrow but I guess I need to see it hit to be happy.

Much of the smoke was from my ears and nostrils trying to draw a 70# bow.  I didn't keep that one long.

Since you laid the gauntlet:

I'll say a '72 Howatt Hunter marked 55lbs (but really 58lbs @ 28), drawn to 30 inches (so actually 63lbs) and throwing a 530grn arrow smoked more of the arrow than any other bow I have ever shot-  A light arrow for that bow don't ya think?

My Dad would say "stone cold flat dab smokes an arrow", following up after the shot with, "thats just plain jane insanity." Im pretty sure my kids will pick up some of those corny lines from me, I guess its heredity.
