I cleaned one up that was acmo painted with WD40. Little bit at a time and worked in small areas.
Cleaned up like a charm and teh WD was easy to just wipe of with rubbing alcohol.

I use nail polish remover with acetone and lacquer thinner sometimes. You might want to move this to Trad History & Collecting site and you will get your answers.

I have stripped dozens of bows with paint stripper and had no problems. Ace Hardware has one that works good. It will even take the factory finish off without damaging the wood or glue joints.

Fast orange hand cleaner works real well. Its takes paint off the bow as wel as it does your hands. Wont hurt he fnish underneath either.
