Applying Skins Question???
« on: February 08, 2011, 09:27:00 AM »
Hope I can make myself clear here. Do I have this correct? If a bowyer was applying them on a new bow the skins would go on top of the glass and under the final finish and if you applied them to an existing bow the skins are applied over the finish of the existing limb then another layer of finish would be applied on top of that?

Or on an existing bow would the original finish be sanded off then skins applied with new finish on top?

Hope I'm making myself clear here.

Thanks TJ

I just lightly rough up the existing finish with steel wool, glue the skins down with epoxy, and put a satin finish over them.  I usually use many layers of clear laquer or polyurathane over the skins.

Don't know if that's the "right" way to do it, but it works for me.

Dan, thanks for the info. Does the fit and finish on the ones done after the fact look the same as an original application?

Here are a couple photos of the last one I've done.  i don't know how they compare to a "factory" job.  I like them.

I like epoxy better than contact cement as it lets me position the skin better and work out any wrinkles.
