Never shot wood shafts/ Please Help
« on: February 20, 2011, 08:50:00 PM »
I just bought a set of cedar wood shafts 55/60 11/32 my current set up is Martin Jaguar 60 50#@28" i used an easton digital draw weight scale on the bow and it pulls 50.6# at my anchor
i now shoot 2117 at 32" 125gn FT. it bare shaft tuned great and arrows fly great with the 2117.
are the wood shafts ok for the set up im currently shooting the shafts are full length bare shafts don't know what i should cut them to or even spined for this bow. Could use all the info. i can get on these wood shafts. Thanks Guy's.
Dale

I would lean toward 60-65 spine shafts with your set up, that would be with your wood shafts cut to at 29" to back of point.

With a 125gn head and cut to 28.5 they should be spined really close.  2117 is one heck of a stiff shaft.  60 65 would be easier to get close.

Well some post were made while I crunched the numbers.  according to stew 55/60 are on the weak side for what flies for you.  Are these shafts finished or still raw?

If they are raw I would try and sellem and get some that are 60/65 and tappered (tappered makes them easier to tune).  Now with woodies the biggest thing is to have them straight before you seal.  I have shot aluminum carbon and woodies are my favorate.

Bet you'll like them once educated. 32" is a super long wood draw. You're going to need stiffer shafts as mentioned already. Keep us utd on your progress.

I would perfer to use wood shafts they look more traditional espically with a nice crest and finish. I don't really like the arrows being 32" thats just what was recommended with the 2117 shaft and it works well, just would rather have a carbon or wood shaft cut shorter. Im also waiting on some 5575 gold tip traditional shafts are those to weak as well at 29" Man don't tell me they are to weak. Thay are full length but i want them 29" OR 30".

Check out the great thread Rob D did. It's on making wood arrows the easy and cheap way. It is on the How to-Resources forum. Good stuff!

I think once you get the proper spine, learn to build wood arrows, then shoot them, you won't want to shoot anything else. Good luck to you.

It's hard to get 32" out of a finished wood shaft.  The nock taper doesn't cost you in length, but you need 3/4" or at least 5/8" for the head taper.  I end up cutting off only 1/4" from 32" raw shafts to get my 30-1/2" BOP arrows.  BUT, until you know where you'll end up leave them long.  It's easy to shorten wood shafts but passing difficult to lengthen them.    ;)

I've been "shorted" a couple times buying shafts that were not a full 32"; though not in recent years.
