I have one that performs satisfactorily for me.  If you are in a deep valley, with a multi story of growth, it will draw a blank.  However, I find it to be a well valued instrument.  Jim

Do you find the 5 points it keeps enough?

I have the original model---with only 3
points and find that-- that is plenty for me.
The woods that I hunt in are reasonably open up
top so there is not really any problems.

I also have the original model. Only use the car one. I like to walk out and when its time know the shortest way to the truck
I try not to let my mind wander...It is too small and fragile to be out by itself.

For the price I can't imagine why you wouldn't just by a full fledged GPS unit. Garmin Etrex can be had for under $100.

Steve I have a Etrex and unless it is wide open with no tree canopy does not work. However it works great on the lake finding my favorite crappie holes.

I've used both. The back tracker usually sells for around $69. The basic extrex sells for $99 but lately I've seen it on sale for $69. It's got alot more basic features and  for the last couple years has the H or High sensitive antenna which get way better signal. Just my opinion but I know which one I'd go with if I wanted a basic GPS.

I just don't have a need for a more advanced GPS. The original backtracker with three waypoints has served me well on the public land I prefer. I set the position of my truck, hang it around my neck and take off. Have never had a problem picking up a signal unless heavy storms come in. "KISS" is my byword when looking at GPS systems.

I'm with Bill on this one. I've got an old Garmin I never use, don't need all the features on it.I like the Backtracker fot it's simplicity and ease of use.  If I was hunting the back country well then yeah I'd probably want something more advanced.
