Hog Target Suggestions

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for an affordable but durable hog target.  I've heard great things about Rineharts and ended up buying the Rhinoblock. I'm very happy with it but I'd also like a 3D hog.  The only hogs they have are competition targets and are incredibly expensive.  I don't want to buy a target and have to replace it months later.  I also don't want to get one with a replacement block/vitals that are not where I need to be shooting them (i.e., behind the shoulder as oppossed to being above the leg).  I'd like any suggestions you guys might have.

I can not help with suggestions, but I am glad to see that other people have noticed that the vitals are poorly placed on 3D targets.

I prefer to practice for hogs using a javelina Target, they tend to be less expensive and I figure if I can hit a Jamie I can hit a bigger hog

I have the Delta standing boar called an Elite-

There is no insert- instead you replace the entire middle section which includes the front leg and vitals area....the target I bought from Sportsman's Guide for 125.00

The replacement section is anywhere from 125-145 dollars.....I think the target is normally more than that but if SG has it its a good deal.

I highly recommend U Stuff-It targets from Trendsetters.  I have three and they are affordable and VERY durable.  And the arrows usually pull out with two fingers if you use nylon netting (ask a camper or boat canvas/upholsterer if you can dive their dumpster).

Kind of rustic looking but durable and relatively inexpensive.

I would go with the rinehart boar target ( Not the rising boar one) We have had one out at our archery club that we have shot for a couple of years and it is still like new. Also, the size of the target is what you will most likely encounter on a hunt.

Thanks for the different suggestions. I would love to get the Rinehart but the razorback is 378!  They now have a buck thats around 125 and I emailed them a few weeks back about coming out with an affordable boar but never heard back from them.  I have been looking at all these now, why can't a single designer put accurate vitals on a hog?  it's not a big deal if there is no insert, I'll just shoot them where I would anyways, but if they material is weak and needs to be replaced then a replacement is worthless if it's in the wrong place.

The Yo buddy boar looks to be pretty close to being correct. And not to bad of price either.

Before I went on my Texas hunt two years ago, I made my own practice target, using a burlap javie target and blue foam.  It was quick, easy, fun and cheap.  I know the blue foam isn't real durable, but I did my practice with broadheads and it worked out OK.  The Titebond painted burlap formed a shell that seemed to make it a bit more durable.  When the kill area got too chopped up, I just squirted it full of Great Stuff foam, smoothed it off and slapped a new piece of burlap painted with Titebond II and some spray paint on it and carried on.  Still shooting it two years later.   Here's a link to building it, and two pix of the finished target:

Believe it or not I have scored a couple nice
targets on craigslist,one at a yardsale,and one
more thing to consider Texasrecurve81,if you have
an archery range within driving distance sometimes you can score bigtime. When they get new ones,they sell the old ones. Depending on condition you can fix em' up pretty good with repair foam kits,and some spray paint.

What i have been wanting to do but havent yet is find a club selling there old targets, they do that now and then, buy a 3D hog and buy a rinehart 3D hog target insert and cut out a hole on the old hog target and put in the rinehart insert and there you have it a cheep rinehart hog target.

This way you can also put the insert/vitals where ever you need them.

You have to remember that 3D targets are built for competition and the scoring rings are not vitals but scoring rings.

Hogs are especially different.  If you shoot a hog in the 10 ring you probably won't take it home.  But when practicing for hunting we don't shoot rings anyway.

The good thing is you buy a used target at a shoot and the scoring rings are shot up.  But the where you want to shoot is virgin territory.

I buy them now and then when the are available.

I am not shooting the messenger but why would they have something that is not correct for scoring? Put the 10 ring in the correct place for a kill no matter what. It has just never made any sense to me.

Wingnut, I understand that they are for scoring but I have agree with Chester, why put the scoring in the wrong place.  I have to take binos to see if I can find where the "10" is on the targets because it's not where I would shoot one.  But you're probably right, it will work out it my favor if I can find a used one, the real kill zone will have only been "accidentally" hit by a stray arrow or two:)

I made a near life size target before my moose hunt. The method would work for a pig target - in fact, you've inspired me for the coming season. Used the heaviest cardboard I could find  from a large shipping box and drew a moose outline (minus legs from the knees down) on it. After cutting out the form, I backed the kill zone with a large 3" thick piece of closed cell foam by gluing it with rubber cement. Then used spray paints to color it dark enough &  to outline upper leg, shoulder, etc. to give it some depth. Finally, I screwed 6' 2"x2" boards fore & aft which I could drive into the ground and keep it upright. Practiced all summer on it, including broadheads, and passed it on to Steve Leffler (1 of our Tradgangers) before his moose hunt last Sept. Hope this helps.
