I had a great time this weekend shooting in a local, low-key, but prestigious 3-D tournament.  It is essentially a fun shoot, but prizes are offered and it attracts a competitive field.  

One of my trad buddies pointed out a fellow I didn't know, and suggested that the fellow was the sort to pad his score.  Later, I had the opportunity to meet and shoot with the other fellow.  He was a crack shot and a straight-up guy.  I could only conclude that my friend had miss-judged him.

I think it's far better to assume a fellow is honest and be wrong, than to assume a fellow is dishonest...and be wrong.

FYI, I don't know the exact rules for "Line Cutting". I assume each shoot is different.

However, when I am asked if a shot is in the 12 ring or the 10 ring, I use the "Rule of Tennis".

In Tennis, you have to see the ball as CLEARLY out. If you have to guess or have the slightest question, the ball is concidered in.

For example: if you are playing Doubles and one guy sees the ball as "in" and the other guy sees it as "out" the ball is "in".

Another example: if one guy says "well, I don't know, looked like it MIGHT be in, then it is "in".

That is how I prefer to score the shots, when I am asked.

You are right Raging Water, when in doubt give the points. If all arrows are called like that it evens out in the end and feelings are better after the shoot. None of us are getting rich at this , might as well have fun.
I always count everyone as honest until proven otherwise. We have 3 guys that shoot in this part of Virginia that are awsome shots. Always hear some jealoius jerk ask if they cheated. I am not one of those guys , but I have seen them shoot. They are that good.   Thanks , Flinthead

Never judge a book by it's cover, or by someone else telling you it was a bad read. It's also easy to just go, have fun and not even keep score.

I should add--I am very competitive by nature, and I'm sorry to say I've made the same mistake as my friend!  Some things take a lifetime to learn.

Maybe a little jealousy on your friend's part? I've witnessed much the same on the Golf course.

Most likely a common occurrence everyhwere.

A good frined of mine was always being accused of such back in the late 80's. I scored him one day at a 2D event and he only had two line cutters.
They were from the inside out. It is still possible that I am the only believer.

I used to shoot competitively and I would make all the local shoots for tuneups. There was one shoot that I won 5 years in a row and evidently some folks took exception to that and complained to the shoot management. They sent a couple of guys around with us and honestly it reallly offended me but I never said anything. I won the shoot with the best scores I had ever shot. Three perfect rounds including a heart on a running pig.I had two arrows out of the kill on the one round. The management apologized to the four shooters and made the statement that these guys don't need to cheat.
The truth is the only person a cheater cheats is himself. I always shot the best I could and my competition was me. When people want to win so badly that they cheat to do it they aren't doing it for the right reasons. They must feel very inferior to do that.
I went back to that shoot the next year but felt so uncomfortable that I never went back again. I had always really enjoyed it.
When a score sounds too good to be possible give the benefit of the doubt. It could be that the person is really that good. Before I went pro I found that out. I highly doubted some guys scores until I shot in back of them. That made me go to a whole new level in my practice and in my shooting.

People misjudged me too!

They used to say.......

 (It's impossible for anyone to shoot that bad.)

So, they sent people out with me and confirmed it....

I am very competitive also (just ask Raging Water). I am also honest. I want every point I earn and I do not want a single point I did not earn. If I am pulling arrows and mine is close, I will not call it. I have seen instances of cheating and I just don't understand it. What could a guy (or gal) get out of a little plaque or trophy if they know they fudged even one point to get it. I coud not live with myself. i would have to burn the trophy so I would not have it there to remind me of how I got it. Anyway, that is just me.

Good for you for giving the guy a chance before judging him. If more people were less judgemental, the world would be a better place.
