Spine Suggestions
« on: March 23, 2011, 06:07:00 AM »
I've currently got a longbow on order from David at Miller longbows, its going to be around 52# at 28in and before I get it I wanna make up some new Douglas-fir arrows for it.

I don't really know what spine weight I should be getting?

Thanks
Ari

ok. I will say it first... We need more info like your draw lenght what length BOP your shooting for and point weight you have in mind?  then we can go from that point on..

Every time I've had a bow custom made for me, I've always asked the bowyer for his recommendation on arrows, since I figure the bowyer should know his own bows best.  I may vary from that recommendation as I get to know the bow, but it's a good place to start.

Personally I'd wait till you got the bow before you started making arrows for it.

I have made arrows a coupla' times in the past to 'welcome' a new bow. These days I wait till it gets here-just tough it out.   :(

Well, I would start with 125 grain point and knowing his bows I would go with 65-70# spine if ya draw 28"s and leave them full length and make them up. Than when ya get the bow cut back an inch until ya get good flight. The nice thing about making up woodies is if they don't work for ya you can put them in the claasifieds and get ur money back or even make a few bucks. Shawn

I do draw about 28" and I was thinking 125 grain points, but I'll ask David what he thinks.

Thanks for the advice.

Ari get a "test kit" from surewood shafts that is the only way to go in my opinion. One of my bows loves both 54spine and 58 spine.

You also have to take in into consideration what type of string material is going to be used as the newer limited or no stretch strings versus B50 will add as much as 10 pounds more on to spine.

I'm not sure what kinda string it comes with, but David suggested arrows spined 50-55.

Ari, I would get the test kit and wait until the bow gets there. Nothing more frustrating than a new bow and the wrong arrows.
