Stu Miller Results & Broadhead Selection, Please Comment
« on: March 27, 2011, 11:59:00 AM »
I have recently gone through the process of calculating arrow specs using Stu Miller's calculator.  Great tool.  Thanks Stu.

I am just getting back into traditional archery after a long layoff.  Back in the day I had very little knowledge of arrow tuning.  Basically just bought properly spined XX75 shafts and fletched them myself with parablolic feathers.  So I need some assistance and advice.  With my new setup I hope to hunt small game, whitetails and turkeys, as well as some 3D and general target shooting/stumping.

I have on order an Elite Classic longbow from Nate at Bama Bows.  Can't wait to see this beauty.  Curly maple riser, red elm limbs with osage orange accents.  Anyway, back to arrow stuff.

The bow will be 64" built to draw 40# @ 27" (my true draw length).  Which combination would you guys choose (I'm leaning towards the CE Heritage, but would like to try GT Trad Blems if Big Jim has any 1535s.  I will be using a stock B-50 sting, but hope to add a 10 strand FastFlight string.

Here are the results.  I know they are very similar, but I'd like to hear what you guys think.  If you notice any glaring mistakes let me know. I realize the type is very small, but if you hover over the chart you should have the option to zoom.

Also I would like to try VPA Terminators on this arrow. Do you think a 3 blade is too much to "push" with this draw weight?  Or should I go with a 2-blade like a Simmons Shark model of appropriate weight or other broadhead altogether?  Thanks for all the help.

I'll second the 2 blade Stingers since I also shoot low poundage bows which you can see in my signature.

As for a 3 blade broadhead, I only shoot 2 blade broadheads out of my two low poundage bows. I think shooting a 3 blade broadhead is asking a little too much of a 40# bow if the shot isn't on the money. In other words, I avoid "Murphy's Law".

I had a feeling the 3-blade might be too much.  The Stingers look interesting, but I read in another post that they are being discontinued.  I'm also considering the yet to be released Werewolf from Eclipse.  Looks pretty interesting.

Why would they discontinue the biggest seller in their lineup?

Apparently the 150s accounted for only 1% of Magnus' sales.  This is where I read it.

As posted above, Magnus is dumping the 150 2 blade in the Stinger line up. While they were a best seller for our trad customers, Magnus said they accounted for less than 1% of their overall sales and were not prudent to keep in the line up for business reasons.
