whitch carbons?

I was reading Shawn Leonards post on spine and paradox ect. with carbons. I'v always shot wood, but am thinking about trying some carbon. I want a carbon that would perform with a center shot long bow 52lb.@ 26"with FF string. Also I have a number of Zwickey 125 gr.Eskimo's that I figure I could use by using adapters. I basicly know nothing about carbons so please help a bro and feel free to throw me some advice, many thanks in advance, Knawbone

Not an expert cuz I just got into carbon a few years ago.  I first used the Rhino's but now am shooting axis 400 (9.8 grains/inch I beleive) with a 100 grain insert and they fly like darts out of all my bows.  My buddy shoots the same exact arrow and we've shoot them out of everything (longbows, hybrids, recurves) with weights ranging from 50#-60#.  Might be the ticket but again I'm not expert.  Good luck!!

I shoot a couple of different recurves at 52Lb. My arrows are Goldtip 55/75's cut at 29 1/4 with 250 grain points. At twenty yards,bare shafts  group well with my fletched shafts and show just a tad weak. I have these fletched with three 5 1/2" shield cut feathers and a seven inch wrap. Total weight is 545 grain with a 23% FOC. This setup has served me well for the past eight seasons.

My draw is 29, so I'd have to guess that .400 is too stiff for 52 at 26.  Would probably try .500, but I'd check out Stu's Calculator to be sure.

I have switched to carbons. I use  Easton ST Epic in 500 [7.3gpi] I have the arrow cut to 30" and use 125fp {shafts are 9/32] I switched to a raised rest. Curently Bear weather rest. They fly like darts. I use them on 40# and 45# and my draw is 29" I use the same Zwickey BH with adpt. for a 150.gr head. They go where I aim. I have not used this set up on deer, it should work just fine.

Low to mid 50#s at 27", I am using Carbon Express 150's with around 200 grain up front. (broadhead and insert combined)

It depend, what bow is it. Hard R/D will require more spine than a mild R/D. If hard R/D and a good performer I would leave a .500 spine long, say 30"s and go with 175-200 grains upfront and cut back until you get good flight. If you want to go with a 28" .500 spine than I dare say 225 up front will be needed. I am shooting a 51# recurve(at my 28-3/4" draw) cut past center and I am shooting .500 spine cut to 29.5"s with 175 up front and getting excellent flight. It takes a bit of experimenting but it is not too hard as long as you are in the ball park to start. Shawn

I think CE 150s (with some experimenting using different weights in the front) will get you to perfect flight.

Hope you don't mind jumping on but I have a question for Shawn Leonard.

Shawn when you say to use say 225gr or 175gr up front, is it just the point, or is the insert included. Like for 225 up front would be say 100gr insert and 125gr point. Thank you.

Whittler yes the total weight up front. I actually shoot 50 grain brass inserts and foot with aluminum which adds 15 grain so 65 grains plus point like 125 would be 190 up front. The 150's would need to be left long and you would need a lot up front. The are .487 spine I believe so even stiffer then the .500s. As said experiment but guys here will usually get ya close. Shawn

Thanks everyone, Just not sure yet about the carbons cause I'm so used to my woodys.I shoot a 55-60 spine cut to 27 1/4 with 160 gn. heads and can group my arrows in a 4 in. circle out to 25 yds.Sometimes it would be nice to have some carbons for squirrel hunting which is always a little tough on the woodys.But I'v found that for Deer hunting when you bounce a wooden arrow off a limb ect., it doesn't spook the Deer like an aluminum arrow does. I don't know about that spook factor with carbon. Wood to wood is a more natural sound.
