Take Down Bolts????
«
on:
April 13, 2011, 02:08:00 PM »
Just got my first take down longbow ( Hill Country K-2).
Just wondering what or if I should put anything on the bolts to keep them from rusting or seizing, or backing out. Plus how tight should I make the bolts?
thanks for answers.

You can put a little oil on them to prevent surface rust. Most people put some string wax between the limbs and on the screws to keep them quiet and in place. I tighten mine to what I believe is hand tight and then snug it a little more.

Don't over tighten them it could possibly crack the limb glass.

Hand tight! Any bowyer will tell you NOT to crank them down. You can also coat them with bow string or bees wax.

You could do like habu bows does and make them from stainless steel, I love mine.

String wax on the threads, and just snug, not real tight. Doesn't matter what the bolts and inserts are made of (brass, stainless steel, whatever), if you over-tighten you'll crack the riser wood around the inserts. So don't think that just because the hardware is steel you can tighten them more!

I think maybe he was referring to steel for rusting. But I could be wrong.

Whittler, habu limb bolts come in both a harden steel and a stainless. I love the stainless as they don't rust.
