Fur silencers or Yarn Balls?

I was planning on making some fur silencers out of some raccoon hides I had trapped and tanned this past season. Will the hide be too heavy to be effective, should I go with the yarn balls?

I prefer beaver over Sheep !! never tryed coon I think mabe there fur is not thick enough ,, Muskrat is also very good

Give it a try and see how it works. I would imagine that if you thin the leather on the hide it would work just fine. You can always take it off and put yarn on.

Post some pictures. I would like to see what it looks like.

I traded for some alpaca yarn and make a combo yarn rubber cat0wisker ball that works great.  The yarn is really light so needs the rubber which really quiets a bow down. The ball hides the whiskers and looks more traddtional.

I prefer Yarn, especially when its wet out. Use a good wool yarn.

then again, fur looks cooler!

I'm kind of a wilderness rover who often uses the stars as a roof and a tree as a ceiling.

I just happened to be examining my beaver fur silencers one morning and noticed that most of one was missing and several strands of my bowstring were chewed through!

I'm sure that the baby bush mice liked the nest their mama made for them.

I've used "ugly" rubber cat whiskers ever since.

Fur looks pretty darn cool. Racoon can be oily, use a nice dry tanned piece. If its too thick, you can literally grab the white leather and pull it off in layers if its tanned correctly till its thin enough. Or skive it down with a skiving tool you can buy at Tandy Leather.
Yarn works great, and is very cheap and easy to replace. If hunting in wet weather, go for rubber cat whiskars.

I have used beaver-otter-mink and have bobcat on my bow at this time.All seem about the same to me.

I have a pair of 20% lamb's wool and 80% acrylic yarn puffs on both of my recurves. Took me 15 minutes to make one pair and install into my bowstring. Both bows are almost silent on arrow release with a light arrow setup.

My yarn is "Lion Brand Yarn", the "Wool-Ease Thick & Quick". Since putting up the link to it is forbidden, you can Google it and and find it online. BTW, I bought my yarn from Hobby Lobby.

Depends on the bow... I use wooly puffs (black widow website) or beaver balls. Some bows sound better with the beaver balls, but generally speaking the wooly puffs work better. I have bear fur on one, and honstly, bare hare is just too long.. it looks weird.

Yes and they work great -- they are very easy to install and stay put.
