which Fiebing leather dye for feathers?
« on: April 15, 2011, 02:09:00 PM »
Hello,

I want to be able to "paint" some bars on feathers.
I've made some dye that works ok.
Also, I've tried magic marker..works but smells for a long time.
Just looking for the BEST way.

I've read some people use Fiebing leather dye for wood to feathers.
I just looked at Fiebing's site and they have a few different types of dye.

They have...
 Leather Dye ( alcohol )

Professional Oil Dye ( they say it's also alcohol, thought this might even help with repelling water)

LEATHERCOLORS (tm) (low VOC)

Acrylic Dye For Leather ( paint-like I guess, might work well in this application??)

Institutional Leather Dye ( water based skeptical )

Leather Stain ( not much description on this)

Anyway, I'm curious which one of these might do the best job by staying on when wet and not stinking up the woods...or the truck on the way there.

Thanks for the help.

I've only used Fiebings alcohol based dye on wood, never feathers. For feathers I use either Rit or a custom dye I bought for feathers from Great Northern Quivers.

How about concentrated RIT and white vinegar with a brush?

Thanks for the input everyone!

I made a mix of methanol, black aniline dye, and black layout fluid.

Seems to work very well.
No smell after 15 mins and doesn't wipe off when soaked with water.

Still want to try the leather dye to see if it works even better.
