Deer hunting around Crete Nebraska -question
« on: April 21, 2011, 11:57:00 PM »
A friend has an invitation for he and I to go hunt on a private farm around Crete. What is the hunting like in this area? What would be the best time for us to make the trip for the best deer hunting.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
I lived in Crete for 4 years while I went to college.  Deer hunting was good then, but now Nebraksa harvests more deer than the total estimated population of the state in those years.
I was  there from '76-80.  I shot two deer there in early season, one the opening day.  Deer can be feeding heavily then.  But...the week before the Rifle Season would be my pick.  Rut activity going on, fewer bugs.  You should have a great hunt and again, the population in Nebr. is sky high.  Many tropy deer killed there this year.  I grew up about 25 miles north of Crete and is the same kind story there.
Good luck!

Mark,
I should have said something about the area.  It is virtually all Agriculture land.  One large River-the Big Blue-runs through the county.  Many smaller creeks with hardwoods in them.  Deer travel fence lines too.  Depending on farming practices on the property it can be brushy next to corn, milo, soybean fields.  There is some pasture ground as well.  During the rut bucks can be anywhere.  You should see plenty of deer.  I hunted extensively just north of Crete near Pleasant Dale.  Good success there.
Western Saline county is more open, but still has creeks and woodlots, etc.

Mark,
Corn harvest is a major factor.  If the corn is still in the fields the deer have lots of 8 foot cover to hide in.  Opening weekend of Pheasant Season can be good as well, as bird hunters move the deer around some. Have a safe trip,
Kirk
