Fast flight string questions

I'm probably being paranoid, but I thought I read here that fast flight string needs to ride on phenolic, not the actual wood ?

I have a Ron Fowley 60 inch longbow, and a Chuck (pure Michigan) Two Tracks longwalker 60 inch longbow. The ends of the bow tips are wood/ phenolic) I think both bowyers told me fast flight was Ok, on the fowley, the string is defiantly sitting on wood, on the Two Tracks long walker there is 3/4 phenolic & 1/4 wood contact with the string. I'm having Josh (oliverstacy) making me up some strings and it sounds like he likes fast flight. I don't have a problem with fast flight, but I'm the type to take care of my bows, hopefully I will hand them down to my nephew 30 years from now and I don't want to abuse them with fast flight string. Am I being to paranoid on fast flight string ?

If the bowyer who made the bow said it is good to go, you are good to go.  So stop being paranoid...  
Since you don't sound sure if the bowyers said it was ok, i would pick the phone up and call them.  (and i think you meant a Ron Foley bow).

Dan Quillian used 450+ on his Longhunter longbows and all they had was a hardwood tip overlay.I shot 450+ and D97 on my DQ bows for years and never had a problem.You don't really have to have a phenolic or micarta tip to use FF type strings.A good hardwood tip with the proper angle of the string grooves will do fine.

  I would also go with what the bowyer told you but I padd my loops with B-50 dacron on all my bows that take fastflight...My new Hoots had a D-97 but I made a new string out of 450 plus and still padded my loops and installed wool yarn where it meats the string groove just to keep from cutting into the grooves and to make my bow dead quiet...Didn't notice any speed loss by doing this but I'm sure a few feet per second could be noticed if I cronograpth it...If you ask your string maker I think he might add B-50 to the loops....Hope this helps to ease your mind but some guys have been known to just add fastflight to some of them older bows and have had good results but I myself worry about limbs coming unglued and tips seperating...Some bowyers add a wedge of phenolic under that wood that you may not know about so ask him just to be safe....God Bless, Keefer's <")))><

I would guess in most FF bows the string rides on glass that is over the wood.

It doesn't matter if it is wood, phenolic, or glass...as long as it the bow (especially the grooves and tips) are designed right.

The only overlays I have ever been concerned about are horn. I use them as a "caps" over phenolic or wood on the tip overlays but the horn is only for cosmetics. I file my string groove through the horn so the string is actually sitting on the underlying overlay (be it wood or phenolic) and the horn is both above and below the string groove in such a way that when the bow is strung it appears as if the string is resting on the horn, but in actuality it is resting on the supporting materials.

My most recent tip overlays included mammoth ivory that is estimated to be 10,000-50,000 years old. That bow is named "Old Mammoth" and is going to Gary Sentman next week.

Thanks for the replies !  Yes it is a Ron Foley Bow, typed that up late (for me anyways) last night, I was hoping for answers so I could get with Oliverstacy (Josh) today on my string selection.
