Has anyone used the hochie mumma elk call are they any good? I am thinking about buying one and using it to try and imitate a red deer hind.

I have one, used it here in KY in 2009 for wife, she drew a bull tag, worked great here, shte got a 4x4, and I used it last year in colorado, helped me bag a nice 6x6. About foolproof, makes 2 different calls.

Good Calls, I carry the Hoochie Mama and the Baby Hoochie Mama. They have work well  for me over last few years. Good luck.

I go to Colorado every year on state land and always carry one. When they (the elk) get in real close and you need to call one more time, it's easy to make a mistake with a mouth call, Houchie works every time.

They are a good call but the elk wised up fast as everyone had one and they all sound the same.  It would be a great call in a new area.

I'm with Wingnut. I carry a Hoochie Mamma and will use it some. It is easy to hear another hunter using his.  I typically have a diaphragm call clenched in my teeth all day. I can simply slip it into my mouth and make calls quickly with no movement, if needed. They do require some practice, but very effective.

Learn to use a diaphragm,that way you can imitate,alter your pitch and tone to exactly whats going on in the herd,something you can't do with a call that produces the same sound over and over.Animals these days wise up real quick in my neck of the woods.

Yes...they do work....but use them sparingly; mainly for the above reasons.  Personally...I carry several different calls: mouth diaphram, Sceery and Primos call/calf calls and Hoochie Momma.  I primarily depend on the mouth diaphram and the Sceery.  Which call I use depends on how the elk are behaving.  I also think you should mix it some.

I second steerstalker.  Regarding your question, I don't know how red deer "cows" sound.  That would be pretty cool if worked.  Keep us posted.

I tried one last year and the elk seemed to respond better to my mouth calls made with a reed.  I think they may have heard one too many hoochies.

Works great in my area of WY, but it brings in more cow elk than bulls, so it must be pretty realistic. But I also use it along with a mouth reed call. I agree with the others it will work or it wont depending on how may have used it in the area before you.

My favorite set up for it is to get in an elk travel area and get comfortable in a good natural ground blind spot. Then I call every 15 to 30 minutes. Cow elk will come by to see what is going on and sometimes I get an opportunity, and sometimes they have bulls trailing along. On occasion the call will get a bull going and I will try to get on him.

Any more unless you are in wilderness or way off the road it just seems better to stillhunt elk. I stillhunt the mornings and use the method above in the afternoons.

I have hunted red deer here in the states on preserves. If I have no success hunting during the seasons, I fill my freezer by hunting red deer in Maine. They are not the wild roaming that you hunt, but I'll tell ya, good luck trying to sneak up on one even in a hunting preserve.  I have stopped them long enough to take a shot with the hootchie mama.  It DOES work, not necessarily to bring them in, but will stop them to get their attention. Unfortunately it can bring in a big red stag or bull elk pretty fast when you are hunting a hind. I've had a couple of close calls.
By the way, I envy you.  Red deer are PHENOMINAL eating. My family's favorite meat next to bison.
The Hootchie Mama for me gets a double thumbs up for red deer.

They're ok as an additional call. You can put expression into the cow like a mouth reed can. So I have carried one to make a few calls as I go walking into an area. That way as you make sound walking you come off as a cow coming in.

I would say they are a great call, and you should have one IN YOUR ARSENAL.  

I agree they are common as some have mentioned but so is all calling.  So I like to mix it up during the calling process.  I will cow call with a hoochie, a diapham, a reed call like an estros call etc. and mix it up to sound like a small herd.

I will also use my bugle tube too to cow call.   I will mix all of those calls through the tube too.  I have have been in a herd and called and called (not too much) but without much response and I simple hit the hoochie through the bugle and the cows came alive and came in.

You need more than one call, so get one.  It is a great starter call and I am assuming you are new to this due to your question.  Have fun.  There is no formula for those wonderful darned things.

Just don't overdo it! I have seen and heard guys who finally have a call that they can use. So they are calling their brains out! Just to hear themselves make an acceptable cow call! Remember less is more.

One way I like to use hand calls like the hoochie is to use it with other calls. I use a couple hand calls (one in each hand) and a diaphram in my mouth to mimic a small herd coming out to feed. It seems to work well in late evening time next to big meadows (parks),water holes while I wait in a ambush spot. I only call once real heavy with lots of chatter then go quite, If elk are near by it seems to relax them and the will come out to feed. I do like the hole they put in the hoochie's air push so I don't hear ghost elk calling from my pocket!

sorry guys been working flat out on the farm Yornoc red deer sure do taste good. there is only 1 caller for a red hind call and thats an electronic caller. I dont want to buy it red deer hinds when they call are a little lower pitch than elk. Our red deer are cunning as a outhouse rat. So Yornoc have red deer stags come to the hoocie mumma? and is it worth buying and shipping over. I carnt find any sound byt
for the hoocie mumma so i dont know if its going to sound right for red hinds. alot of questions i know lol. By the way this site is brillent and everyone that is on this forum is top notch cheers.
