Arrows too light on a 50#er?

Hi all,
I'm hopin to hear what some of your arrow set-ups are. I'm currently shooting a heavily reflexed/deflexed hybrid that is cut just shy of center. I shoot 50# @ my 29in draw and am currently putting through 31" aluminum 2016's and 500's with 145gr up front. I figure this is approx. 475-510 total gr and about 9.4 - 9.6 gpi. Arrow flight looks great and while the arrows are a bit lighter than I would normally shoot, I think it works because of the fact that they flex around the riser a bit better. Anybody else shoot a similar set-up? Thanks!

I think you should be in real good shape.A lot of people shoot 9 grains.

that is exactly the same set up that i'm shooting. i have a field point test kit and after much testing with the weight up front with the 2016s, i use 145 grain field points and 150 grain wensel woodsman broadheads. don

If you're shooting a 9.4-9.6 GPP arrow, you're doing just fine. My 42# bow shoots 10.02 GPP and it smokes a 2212 arrow weighing 421 grains.

The arrow ought to fly good off that weight bow, however I calculated your arrow weight at 475 to be 15.32 gpi and at 510 totalto be 16.45 gpi. The 2016 shaft weighs 10.6gpi bare.

I am shooting 450 gr. arrows out of a 56# at my 30.5" draw Rivers Edge Recurve 'Retro". I used to be of the belief that you needed a heavy arrow to get a recurve longbow quiet. The static tip design of the RER paired with an 8-strand SBD and two small wool silencers at the 1/4 points of the string and the bow is dead silent and extremely fast. I only hunt deer and turkeys and I have no concerns about arrow weight and penetration.

The buck in my avatar was killed with a 50@28 Firefly longbow shooting 500 grain carbons. I got a pass thru at 20-25 yards.

cbCrow, I just realized where my math was coming from originally...i was actually calculating the grains per pound. (i.e. 473 total gr divided by 50# = 9.4 gpp) For some strange reason this just dawned on me. Again...I'm a little slow!      :rolleyes:      

heydeerman, if I could put down a deer like yours, with ANY set-up, I'd be THRILLED!
