Micro Flight #8,, what insert?
« on: May 28, 2011, 08:27:00 AM »
boss brought me in 2 doz un shot stemmler microflight 8's the box says 45-50# spine and right now they are 28" BOP with inserts glued in (box's also say 28")  so these are factory and I'm not sure if I can pull the the original inserts out with some heat but figure theres an aluminum sized insert that should fit these enough to mess around with them.

thanks for any info,, T

Too much heat and they will either splinter or burn.  The inserts were almost certainly installed with Ferrel-Tite and should come out easily with a little heat.  I'd suggest installing a field tip and heating it slowly and gently until the inserts just breaks loose enough to twist them out.  I would not apply heat directly to the shaft.  Actually, unless they are waaaaaay too long (like 28 and you draw 24), I'd just leave them as is.  Those heavy fiberglass shafts will shoot well over a large range; much more like wood than carbon or aluminum.

Micro flite arrows came with more of an outsert. a portion of it fit into the shaft but the outer part was tapered to fit either a glue on broadhead/field point at the point and a nock taper for the other end. the shafts are fiberglass so I would definately shy away from heat or use it very sparingly and not directly on the shafts . the fibers could seperate and ruin the shafts . If you do get the points out measure the diameter of the part that was inside and compare it to modern aluminum inserts . I believe the outside diameter of a  microflite that heavy is 11/64 so an insert from an aluminum arrow with 22 as first # would be your starting point ie; 2213,2216,2219

did that outsert look like one of those short pointy field points?  this does not look like the taper of a tapered or swagged arrow..

thanks alot for the posts everyone,, T

As hutnfool62 suggested, you really need to get the existing points out and measure them precisely with a micrometer or caliper.  Post the measurement and any number of people here can do the math and tell you what aluminum insert will work the best for you.  The problem is, there wasn't any specific measurment table published for microflite sizes; at least not that I remember.  A #8 shaft took a #8 insert.
If you're still with me and want to do the math, to calculate the inside diameter of an aluminum shaft, say a 2117 for example would be 21/64 (the outside diameter) minus 2 x .017 (wall thickness) = .328125 - .034 = .294125.  So if the outside diameter of the insert you remove is close to .294125, you'd use a 2117 insert; either the common glue in/screw in type, nibb type point, or glue in/glue on adapter for glue on points or broadheads.

The Micro flites I used always had inserts, never saw an outsert. I can remember insert sizes.

I guess my terminolgy is not correct . when I said outsert I should have said adapter . What I was referring to does not fit on the outside of the shaft but indeed inside but it protrudes out with a taper . The only micro flites I've seen have had either a bullet point / target tip or the tapered adapter I refered to .I've never seen one with an insert that would allow the points to be changed by threading them in or out . I won't say they don't exist I just have never seen one . good luck on your hunt for the correct size and as always share your findings so others might benefit as well

I have tried to find aluminum shaft inserts to put in fiberglass shafts. Inserts can be found to fit but ths flange size is smaller & does not fit to the outer edge of shaft because of the wall thickness is greater than aluminum. They can be used & shaft sanded down or use a field tip to match O. D. of glass shaft to help prevent damage.

DLM,
It would be a pita, but a washer between the insert and the shaft would work.  I'd be concerned about sanding down a Microflite shaft as they tend to split there anyway.
