Too light?
« on: June 05, 2011, 10:36:00 PM »
I am having a heck of a time tuning my new widow recurve. It's 60 @ 26. I've shot grizzly sticks, heavy carbon express heritage 250s, and an assortment of arrows in the 650 grain category. On a whim, I shot my buddies gold tip 5575s cut to 27 and weighing about 410 grains. They flew and hit awesome! Makes absolutely no sense to me. Would I be hurting my bow if I started shooting arrows this light? Will penetration with a three blade muzzy 125 be enough? Thanks in advance for any and all constructive comments.

410 grains sounds light to me out of a 60# bow. I like to shoot 10-12 grains per pound. However I know nothing about carbon arrows. Check with black widow and make sure your not voiding your warranty if it's new. I think they recommend 8 grains per pound and up.

6.8 gpp is far lower than I would personally recommend for the bow's own longevity. 9 gpp would be my lowest recommendation. The BW bowyers could provide you the most accurate info.

I personally shoot 51@28.. shelf - 1/8" past center...29.5" 340's...100 gr insert and 250 gn tip for a 565 total wt.

I wouldn't even normally consider this weight but lately I'm so aggravated with my current arrows that I sat in awe at how accurate thes light arrows were. Like dead on the money. I might try a little insert weight but if it's not harmful as is I might just shoot the 410s.

It has little to do with the actual weight IMO-but you did likely find the right spine.

This is from the Q&A on the Black Widow website.

Q: “How much arrow weight should I have?”

A: We recommend at least 9 – 11 grains per pound of bow weight. (You must use at least 8 grains per pound on all Black Widow bows in order to be covered by warranty.

So yes, it could hurt your bow and it definately voids your warranty.

I might try a 180 gr Silver flame or Muzzy 220 up front to get a little extra weight.  I've tried weight tubes before and they seemed to change the spine on me.  I hope this works because it is really amazing how well this lighter setup flies.

Your into another fun part of the game getting your setup correct. IMO, just as much can go wrong from improper release & technique as not. Are you shooting split or 3-under, glove or tab, arrows how far past the shelf? Once, I had a shoot wreck & had to retune all over from the beginning. NEVER would have thought it could make any difference. But it did. Had switched the string nock to under & could barely hit the bale.

I shoot 3 under, with a glove.  Arrows were about 2-3 inches past shelf.  With these light arrows, they are less than an inch.  It could have been an off day.  I will try again with three arrows (Grizzstik 680 gr, Carbon express footed 620, and the gold tip pro 5575 410) and just see if it was me or if the bow really does like the short fast arrows.
