New Bow!!
« on: June 10, 2011, 09:24:00 PM »
Well, thanks to my good friend Fred (AWBowman), I will soon be the proud owner of a 58" BW SAG. I will be bringing it to Colorado with me in Sept for elk, so I want to get a good arrow set up. The bow is 58# @ 28 and I draw just over 29". Using Stu's calc, I came up with a 30" GT 7595 with a 100 gr insert and 125 gr point putting total arrow weight at 509 gr. Does this sound like a good starting point to you guys? Weight tubes are also an option and may very well be added later.

Congratulations on the bow. Sorry that I cannot help you with the calculations since I shoot 54 lbs@28" and use 100 grain inserts and 175 grain tips for a total arrow weight of 550 grains for Gold Tip 35/55 kept full length. I like using the extreme forward of center for my arrows.

Congrats.  Let's see some pics when you get it in.  Stu's calculator always gets me close but it's never dead on.

That sounds a bit stiff. I shoot a full length GT 7595 with a 100gr insert and 250 point out of my Toelke (centercut) which I draw to 31 inches so our draw weights are pretty close. Bare shafting this indicates just slightly weak and the fletched arrows fly like darts. I would recommend a test kit and expect to be closer to 225 than 125 for your point weight. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have a bunch of 5575's I'm going to stick with now but I'll see what I can do with the 7595's before elk season.

I'm shooting 5575's with brass inserts and 315 gr heads, no weight tubes, cut to 29".  My bow is 66@28.  Total arrow weight is a hair shy of 700 grains.  This is what I'm using for elk this year.

At your draw that bow will be pulling around 62# with a 509 gr. arrow thats only 8.2 grains per # of bow weight. Way too light for that set up. in fact Black Widow will not honor guarantee for bows shot under 9 grains per pound of bow weight.
Now if you replaced the 125 head with a 200 to 250 gr. head, you would get the weight up and drop the spine in those arrows, would probably shoot much better. I shoot a 56# bow at 29.5" arrows are GT 55/75 100 gr. inserts, 250 gr. head for total weight of 670 gr. good speed but most inportant is penetration, bad to the bone.  RW

Thanks! I'll get my hands on some heavier tips and start building some heavier arrows. I'll shoot for 700 grains and see if I can get something flying well close to that weight.
