DIY elk in south central Utah

Trying to figure out the best bet for any elk in south Utah or SW Colorado. I can't quite figure out the OTC regs for Utah, talked to F&G but could not get a clear answer because I'm not set on a location. I will be camping and day hiking in as I will be on my own for the hunt(and will have my 72 year old dad tending camp and assisting if I shoot one). Any of you Utah or Co tradgangers have opinions please give me a PM. I've hunted elk in Idaho, Montana and Oregon the last few years but have not had a shot. Had close calls but no shots. Thanks. I hunt unit 71 in s.w. colorado good area for day hikeing with o.t.c. elk either sex tags...plenty of camping areas....hope to go this year missed last year...

The reason there is no clear answer here, is just that. If you are more specific as where you are going to hunt, that would help. All the limited entry elk units are spike/cow archery, and there are a couple any elk units as well. If you are archery hunting, you will be buying an archery elk tag that is good for both types. Just know where you are as if you shoot a big bull in a limited entry unit it is considered poaching. PM me with what unit you are going to hunt, then I can tell you if it is spike/ cow or open bull. I would hunt CO personally, but that's just me.

I would also hunt CO if it were me. There are nice elk in both places but the Ut ones you can't hunt unless you draw the right tag. Gary
