Interesting variety! I have been using plain leather (deerskin) and never noticed it being loud. On my longbow I just made the shelf and shield from a single piece of leather. Recurves usually work better with a separate shield and shelf due to the sharp angle where shelf and sideplate meet.

I couldn't get as good arrow flight with sealskin on my longbow. My son's Herter's recurve likes it though.

Something in me just rebels at the thought of sticking velcro on a trad bow. I know, fiberglass is not all natural either, but it's a personal thing.

Beavertail sounds intriguing, but the back of a worn-out deerskin glove is a lot cheaper.

I use the stuff that satelite archery makes(bear hair) that little piece of leather does not seem to wear out at all and I prolly shoot 3000 arrows a week. My go to bow has had the same one for 3 years. they give you enough fur for 3 applications and I change it or swap it over MAYBE once a year.$5 cant go wrong ..  I've tried all the fur stuff holds up for about a week, then it's done.

I use dear hide and the rough side of leather.  Both work equally well.  I have been unable to wear them down as of yet.

Of course, your fletching configuration will play into wear and noise and flight as well.  Just be mindfull.
Good hunting and God bless.

seal skin, bear hair, velcro and leather.

i ain't tried 'gator and sharkskin...i will eventually, though.
i was told by a sales person, when purchasing an out-of-date newpaper that it was out-of-date...

i told her "i've been told i'm out-of-date, too"...

does that mean i'm up-to-date?
