Long Bow Arrow Rest
« on: June 28, 2011, 03:31:00 PM »
Can anybody offer any assistance regarding the location and type of arrow rest for a long bow. I have no arrow rest and would not want to make holes in the bow.

BF,  Do you have a leather wrapped handle?  If so, fashion a leather wedge about a 1/4 to 1/2 Inch wide at the top and tapering down to nothing and slip it under the leather grip so it sits just above your bow hand index finger.  If no leather grip, you can just use Barge cement (contact type glue) and place it where you need it.  No holes necessary.

PS,  You'll get a better response on the Pow Wow or Bow builders forums.

No leather grip.  Should the shelf be located about 1/4" above the center point of the bow??

Hey Tom, for $5 you can get a kangaroo leather rest and sideplate combo from Scott Treaschner on the Sponsors Classifieds. Just use some Barge cement to glue it down. If you want to raise it up, cut a small, match size piece of leather and glue that down straight up from the deepest part of the grip. Martin has some adhesive rugs and plates that come with just the right size leather to install under the rest. Sounds like you want to put a weather rest, or elevated rest on your longbow. Not really necessary. Good luck.

BF  I think the standard is to measure up from the center point of the bow about 1.5".  that will put the center of pressure of the bow when drawn correctly into the base of your thumb.  You might try to just "feel" where the bow feels most comfortable and place the rest right above your finger.

Just take a razor blade and cut a piece of old leather belt and then shave it in half and you have the plate and rest(only need it 1/16 of an inch thick)then glue it on.An old belt will last you a lifetime in rest material.
