Enough for buffalo????
« on: July 02, 2011, 11:21:00 PM »
I shoot a tomahawk diamond ss longbow 60#@28.  Pushing 615gr Easton traditional only arrow with a zwickey no mercy head.  Can I get enough penetration to efficiently take a buffalo.  Thoughts and comments appreciated. Thanks

Super sharp head is a must and keep the shots close. Never shot one or hunted them but have read a lot! Shawn

Glad that you meant bison. Refer to the test shots on a buff that amar911 recently posted with a bow that was 68# @ 29.5".

Notice how high the shoulder (scapula) is. The hump tends to cause some to shoot high so be sure and keep your shot low enough.

Some years ago I watched Jim Stepp maker of the "Step Ladder" climbing system when he shot a bison with one of my Shrew longbows. The bow weight was 57# and he shot completely through the animal with the arrow landing on the ground on the other side. The arrow he used was a 400gr Gold Tip tipped with a 125gr 4 bld Steel Force broadhead. He cut ribs on both sides, I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself...

You'll need a good size freezer for sure. This one is a cow, bulls are even bigger

I would think so. As I have said before I shoot a 55# Tomahawk with 590 grain arrows that have woodsman elite heads on them. I would shoot with all the confidence in the world at any game animal on any continent. (Except the truly big ones like elephants, and cape buffalo.)
