Jack Howard and light weight arrows

Been shooting my Howard Carbon Clasic the past few days. It is 56# at my 27" draw. It is one of the first two carbons Jack made.  I am amazed at how well a 28.5" 2114 with 100 grain head shoots.  Total weight of about 440 grains.  This is basically the same set up that Jack used with swaged 2114 arrows with his own 125 gr. 3 blade head with razor blades glued on.  He reportedly took over 56 deer and a number of elk with this set up typically with shots over 40 yards. I have reviewed his penetration studies but never saw a comment from him on how well his set up penetrated elk while shooting light weight arrows at fairly long distances.  He certainly killed a fair number of elk.  Any thoughts?

Numbers on a piece of paper or in the field results..   I'll take results any day.... Sometimes we get hug up on the "Numbers"  If a person has taken over 56 animals with this set-up (RESULTS)  Then numbers really don't matter..

My thoughts?  I don't question Jack Howard on anything.  He recommended 2114's out of his bow.  Regardless of draw weight   :p   He was the Man.  How can you question someone who tested toilet paper for flushability   :D   ...Van

Those Classic are such beautiful bows and shoot just like they look! I saved some of Jack's post. He loved to test everything. He was right about which arrow shaft, brace and where to put the nock set.  He had his bows down pat. I was one of the lucky ones that landed one of Jack's last two bows.  Rich Lopez did an outstanding job on the finish.  Here it is. Makes me sick still.  First time I took her out for a spin.  My arm guard with buffalo 5 cent pices on it scratched the bow!Rich has the bow again to make it perfect again.  I know Jack would just say it was character but I could not let Rich's perfect work left like it was.  MG, I like cedar out of my Howard's.

No question that Jack thoroughly scrutinized everything about his bows and set up.  I just wondered if anyone ever talked to him about the kind of penetration he was getting on elk with his light arrow set up as I remember him stating that most of his shots were beyond 40 yards.

As Van has stated, Mr. Howard loved the Easton 2114. Called it the most versatile shaft in the Easton line. I shoot 29 inch 2114's out of 50 to 55 pound recurves and long bows with 125 grain field points or broadheads. After weighting with styrofoam I can get these shafts up to about 515 grains with heads. They are quiet, accurate and deadly on deer size game.

At Jacks recommendation, I shoot 2114's out of all of my Howard bows from 49# to 57#.  They fly like they were made for each bow individually.

It was my good fortune that Jack sent me 11 of his old tournament arrows.  You guessed it, 2114's.  He assumed that I would strip them and refletch them for my use, so he "did me a favor" and stripped the fletching and removed his personal cresting.  I was so disappointed.  I would have never though of shooting those arrows.  They would have been hung on the wall.  as it is, they are hanging on the wall any way as blank shafts.  2114 X7 Platnum.

Because of Jacks advice, I shoot 2114's out of all of my bows with great results.

Can't argue with "" expert.  I sure miss reading his posts and talking to him on the phone.

I am working on the bow as we speak. I have decided to keep the bow. I miss her..  :p  Just kidding.

She is a beauty. Should be done in a few weeks.
