Bow holder for ground hunters...(pix)
« on: July 14, 2011, 08:51:00 PM »
I remember an old timer making one out of an old arrow and pvc and it would collapse. The arrow would go in the dirt and there was a "fork" type end to hold the bottom limb of the bow so it was upright.

Anyone have any idea how to make something like this or any other device to hold a bow up in front for close grabbing for those of us who hunt off the ground and nothing to lean the bow on.

**EDIT**

Played with a few ideas and this was the best, most simple, and most effective version to pack in on a hunt.

Used Bob's idea and ran with it...here is something I made and it works like a charm!!  Keeps the blow where I want it and keeps my hands free if I need to do something from calling/rattling/binos/checking the winds/napping etc.

Its some para cord, an S hook, and alligator clip, and a cord lock...I am going to make a few more and adjust it slightly but this will will work just fine!

Tie two sticks, old arrows, etc. together crossways. Then carry them in, cross them in opposite directions and create a sort of 'bipod'. Lean the bow in between the two.

When it is all done it will act sort of the way that shooting sticks do.

I was looking for something smaller...this fork would hold onto the bottom limb and was very small/compact and the bow would sit upright so you could just grab it and shoot quickly.

I am still using the old Bear bow holder they sold in the late 60's a friend of mine made them and sold them and the patent to Bear Archery in the mid 60's.

Use a small wooden stake and two 1/4" dowels 3 1/2" long and drill a hole 1/4" on the top corner of the stake and then another hole 5" down toward the bottom of the stake toward the back and glue the dowels in. the dowels should be offset, draw a imaginary line they look like this /. Put the bottom peg in front of the string and rest the limb on the top peg.it should stand and you can grb it and slide it in front of you.

I bring my bow holder in with me. I call it "my left hand". If I'm sitting, it's across my lap with my left hand on the riser, if I'm standing, I put my lower limb in my pocket (lower cargo pocket) and hold with my left hand. I don't want to be reaching for my bow, or tipping it over when a deer comes in. I did the same back in my wheelie days.

Get yourself a small S hook and put it on a 6 in or so string. Then tie it to your belt loop on your right/left side. Rest your lower limb on the ground between your leg's. Hook the S hook on your string. Very easy to unhook with very little movement. Been doing it this way for 40 years. For use in a tree stand make a little pocket on your lower leg near the bottom of your pants and rest your limb in it. Both work great.

Why not shorten an arrow and thump it in the ground. Then lean your bowstring on the nock. Works for us. Short arrow snaps in your quiver. Oh no fletching required

I use whats there at the time if I set mine on the ground but I prefer to hold it because you never know.

Fish, I like your improvements to the bow holder. If you have any rubber dip dip the s hook and you will take away any noise & shine.
