Eric,a hard frontal impact can drive the arrow's insert back in the shaft like a wedge, splitting it.The carbon collar encircles the end of the shaft, preventing that from happening.I cut pieces of aluminum shaft to do the same thing. It definitely saves a lot of arrows from braking on those frontal hits.
I'm not 100 % sure if I understand your question but you can still change points any time you want to.

well i didnt know if there were any weight issues with doing this, do you just hot melt the colar on? or how does that work?

Epoxy works best for collars if you are using aluminum arrow shaft pieces as the collars (footing). Some of the collars just slip onto the shaft and are held in place by the flange of the front arrow insert (I prefer brass inserts, especially when I am using collars). The collars (or footing) usually weigh only a few grains, so they won't have much effect on arrow flight unless you are right at the edge with respect to spine. The strength that is added to the arrow shaft is often well worth the effort.

The carbon collars are 5 grs so they won't affect anything as far as weight or tune.
