Allen Boice's "Contender"
« on: July 18, 2011, 10:05:00 AM »
I had the opportunity to shoot one of Allen's bows. As some of you know he makes one of the finest longbows in the world today. I have always admired his bows in their design and craftsmanship. Well the Contender is no longer "a contender"...I believe it is the champion! As far as performance it draws very evenly in poundage. It sits stable and easy in the hand throughout the shot. I love the way the shelf sits right down into the top of your bow hand. It has some speed to it for those wondering. The first 3 arrows out of this bow I knew it was a keeper!

The limbs are yew wood cores and veneers! There is something about yew wood in a longbow that just works! Love the rich color of that wood too. The handle section, front overlay and tip overlays are some beautiful cocobola.

Agree with all the above comments.  I too have a Contender.  Mine is 66" and 54# at 28".  It has the connection hinge takedown.  Mine has a bamboo core with yew veneers.  Smooth, reasonably fast, and a pleasure to shoot.

Steadman the Blacktail is heading out to Utah with me...but there will be backups! haha

Lon have a rich trad. history in Oregon and I guess because of that the tradition of making bows has never died off.

That is a beautiful bow Dave! I've been wanting to try one of Allen's bows for a while now. What are the specs on this one?

Snag, since you have that to shoot now how about you ship me your Toelke to try out for a couple of weeks to see if I want to order one? I have never shot a Liberty but always loved the woods Allen used in them.

Never heard of the bowyer before but it looks like a winner to me. Beautiful woods and it appears to be well crafted. If it shoots as good as you say......it will be a keeper!

It's 51#@28" and 64" long.

Allen's been making bows for a long time. He is very knowledgeable person and has a strong commitment to building the finest bow he can. This bow is evidence that he is one of the best at what he does.

He is truly a superb bowyer and has integrity plus. I have his Chief and his English. I worked the English two weekends ago and the chief this weekend. Superior bows from a superior bowyer!
