I'm wearing out my shelf??
« on: July 18, 2011, 06:46:00 PM »
Can someone tell me what step(s) I need to take...
I'm wearing out my velcro shelf on the far outside of the shelf. The fuzz is pretty much gone on the very edge of the velcro. I'm left handed,  so, it would be the far right edge.

Thanks in advance,
Mick

Mine is doing the same thing and i'm sure it can be a few contributing factors but the most likely culprit is the arrow being under spine, i'm thinking.  Anyway i'm wanting to see what other responses you get that can help me too.

try adding some point weight or weaker spined arrows, you can also up your brace height some. I also solved that problem of mine by shooting cock feather in and putting a second string nock below the arrow and raising the bh. i went from bad fishtailing that wouldnt straighten out no matter what I did to shooting bullet holes laser straight.

Folks, I just went through this on a new bow that I got. The wearing on the outside shelf is caused by too stiff a shaft and the tail end of the arrow is smacking the shelf as it passes. I added a heavier tip and this fixed the problem. Now my arrows are flying straight and across the shelf instead of hitting the outside. I tested this by putting a piece of tape on the edge where the shaft was hitting, after each shot as I went up in weight 'til I found the right tip weight. This was with the help of some other Trad Gangers helpin me find the right spine weight for a particular shaft I was shooting.

It's normal wear.  Replace the velcro.  It's cheap...Van

No,it does sound like too stiff an arrow. It can also be caused by form issues like too high an elbow on your drawing arm, causing downward pressure on the arrow with your top finger, assuming you shoot split finger.Torquing the string can also cause it.

Check the bow tuning info at bowmaker.net.

If it is due to too stiff a spine,it may take quite a bit more point weight to correct.

Thanks Jim..
My form probably has alot to do with it.  I'm very new to trad... Shot the compound with fingers only(no mech.release). Got a long ways to go with this wonderful trad stuff.  I'm really liking it.

Doesn't this mean that the arrow is swinging down and smacking the shelf?  If it's sitting on the shelf at release, it would have to move downward to hit the shelf, unless it was a feather causing the wear.  I had this same problem, and turned my cock-feather in, which took care of it.  Evidently I was just catching the quill of my 5 o'clock feather when it was cock-feather out.

I still think I'm having a nock-height / release-hand torque issue, and want to solve it.

mine does the same thing. i thought it was normal. now hearing you fella's makes me think....  i have noticed that if my hand gets too close to the arrow i will have a tiny paper cut in between my thumb and first finger after the shot. am i not 100% tuned right?

i feel like i'm the most consistant i have ever been....
