For the experienced hog hunter.
« on: July 25, 2011, 11:07:00 AM »
I have a dozen 2317 alloy shafts heading my way but after placing the order I have been wondering if I have gone overboard.

The bow I plan to use these arrows from draws 60# @ 28" and will be drawn to 29".

Playing with Stu's calculator for BOP lengths 29.75" and 30" and a 250 and 255 grain pile, respectively, I get the following figures:

Arrow weight: 729 and 731 grains.
Specific weight: 11.5 and 11.5 gpp.
FOC: 16.8 and 17.1%

Now my question is, are the above mentioned figures desireable or not?

Thanks.

How does it shoot for you?  i kill my hogs with a 48 @ 27 longbow with 500 grain arrows with a 175 to 180 grain scary sharp broadhead on the end of it.  I don't know how big the hogs are in India, but that set-up would kill the biggest animal we have over here!  It sounds like you have a hog killing set-up there! Good luck to you!

At 11.5 gpp that ought to zip right through any hog you run into.....unless the hogs in India are real giants!!

Any pictures???

Randy,

Yet to get the bow or shafts and it's going to be a 10# jump for me, so may take a month or more before I am very comfortable with the 63# draw weight.

I have seen very few of the really big ones (not counting those seen in wildlife sanctuaries) but the biggies we see frequently are in the 165 to 190 lb. range.

Thanks for the reply and good wishes. I just hope the trajectory isn't too loopy out to 20 / 25 yards.

Thanks.

No worry's there and if a tiger sneaks up on ya that arrow will work as well! As long as it flys well you have the makings of a fine hawg slaying arrow.

As long as they fly well you have a great set up. I shoot 12 gpp and 15 foc with woodies and that works perfectly.    :archer2:

I love my hog hunting but tigers in the woods is just plain  :scared:  . A guy near here has 8 or 9 in a very large outdoor enclosement. I've watched him feed the big male and he can get that cat to jump 18' into the air to catch a chicken. After I watch that I have another look at the 12' fence holding them in and hope like hell he never runs outa chickens! Most impressive animal on earth in my book. Seeing one in the wild has to be a most amazing site, unless he's looking for you of course.

If they tune correctly and you can put them in the right place they should work awesome.

Bjorn, good to read that.

What sort of penetration are you getting on broadside shots on tough shielded hogs and beyond what distance does the arrow start to drop appreciably?

Thanks.

Dodger,

It really doesn't matter how far the arrow drops as long as you know what it's doing at the yardages you are willing to take shots.

I shoot 60-65 lb bows and shoot 700-750 ish arrows out of all of them...I see very little drop at 20 yards.

Beyond that there's noticeable drop.

The most important thing is that at extended yardage the higher momentum will drive the arrow through an animal where a lighter arrow may not.

190 lb pig is a big one. Good luck

Like Ray I don't notice any drop at hunting distances with 12gpp.
I have tried to look at the arc but the arrows are flying way too fast for a visual anything.    :bigsmyl:
There was a thread on here a coupla' weeks ago that talked extensively about arrow drop over distance; not sure they ever agreed on the math formula though.
I hunt on the ground and penetration has not been a problem, although on a big Hog it is hard to have too much.

Thanks to all that replied.
