I think you would want to contact the ranger for that district of the forest and maybe even the dow enforcement officers for that area they can give you a heads up on conditions for that area. Just so you know not only have we received record snow in the northern parts of the state, when I drove over Rabbit ears pass for 4th of july most of the area in the trees still had drifts of 6ft or more of snow there. We have also had a fair amount of rain this summer in the northern part of state where hunting over waterholes might not be as productive as years past.

Just got off the phone with the Forest Service in Walden and got the info I was needing ....looks like a go! Thanks for all the info on here         Now I just have to find an Elk that want's to commit suicide......

My dad and I will be in that neck of the woods also the first week and a half in September.  Good luck to everyone, hopefully there will be lots of pictures to share in another month or so.

If theres a lot of snow high, do the elk tend to be lower?

what are they eating this time of year?

There is going to be some receding snow up high on protected North slopes and so fresh grass there  while lower elevations grasses are drying out- I plan to go high early.

We will be there the first week ....so high it is. If sign is lacking we'll move down accordingly.

I hunted rabbit ears last year. I think the area would be great the first week of the season. Bugled in one bull but got winded. We hunted mid september. Lots of human traffic in the area on the weekends but during the work week wasn't bad. As long as you don't mind putting some miles you should be able to find some elk!
