Elk Countdown
« on: August 12, 2011, 05:28:00 PM »
18 days until I go on my annual elk pilgrimage and it is all I can do to keep myself from loading un the truck now....

Seriously, how many times do I need to go through my lists, look at my maps, re-read previous year's field notes, shoot, work out....

Man, I can't wait!

I've got until the 30th of this month before I leave for 2 weeks. It's getting hard not to think about it! I've got too much going and haven't got everything tight and right yet. Just the important stuff...not the food! haha  I'll be working on that this next week. Time is flyin'. I saw a picture today of a "hard-horned" bull that wasn't taken here in Oregon. They are rubbing and the juices are flowing!
Have a great season guys!

( days till I pull out of here for COlorado. I'm getting out there ahead of opening day to set up base camp, acclimate and scout, as well as visit with some friends.

Threw the pack on tonite with a full load, including bow and quiver and went for a good walk with it. It felt good. Boots feel good too.
Only extra on my walk was my ipod, cranking some of my favorites to pump me up even more. No ipod on the mountains, I want to hear every bugle, every magpie, every coyote. Pullin out the driveway at 0600 on the 22nd.
...stood alone on a montaintop, starin out at a great divide, I could go east, I could go West, it was all up to me to decide, just then I saw a young hawk flyin and my soul began to rise......

Leaving for WY on the first.  Shooting good, in the best shape I've been in years, trucks running good, gear ready, and watchin' elk hunt videos.

Just got back from an all out day hike yesterday in my elk area.  Got another trip planned this tuesday.  It is sooooo close but sooo far away.  Like all of you I am shooting everyday, going thru my gear daily, looking at my gear and bow daily, and constantly day dreaming.  I head in the last day of August and will be backpacked in for 6 days.  On a side note found a moose shed yesteday!!!!

A buddy and I set a couple treestands & trail cams at wallows about 3 miles in yesterday.  Not much wallowing activity but elk sign everywhere.  These wallows are always tore up when we hunt at the end of season so we're gonna hit the first couple weekends and see if we can catch some action.
