Black bears and trail cameras
« on: August 14, 2011, 01:54:00 PM »
I'm heading to Ontario for my first bear hunt on the 19th.  I'm planning on bringing my Bushnell Trophycam with me and I was wondering how you guys feel about bear-proofing trail cameras.  Is this something you recommend?  Anyone have any thoughts on a DIY type of bear box?  Any thoughts on this topic are really appreciated.  TRW

I wouldn't put out a trail cam for bears unless I bear-proofed it. I've seen a number of nice expensive cameras destroyed.

I get 2 or 3 eaten every year when they are set for elk.

I wondered about this too. I had the buggers chew up a good canoe on me on one moose hunt!! I'm sure they won't miss something like a camera near a pile of food.      :banghead:

You can't hide anything from a bear.Go to camlockbox.com and get a steel box for your camera. They have a regular and a heavy duty.I have been using the regular ones for a couple seasons and they have stopped all problems. The bears don't seem to want to mess with them. You just screw it to a tree with a couple 1/4" lags and the front of the box lfts and tilts out. When you replace the camera,it is aimed exactly as it was before.I don't bother to lock them but you could if you want to or just a small nut and bolt would be plenty.Cheap insurance for about $35.My cameras are Bushnells also.I won't put one out without the box.
