Alaska black bears
« on: August 18, 2011, 11:20:00 AM »
After my sightseeing trip to Alaska, I have the bug to go back and hunt black bears. I am thinking that there would be some places along the SE coast that would be good, and that you wouldn't have to worry about brown bears. Prince of Wales Island appears to be a possibility, but do any of you Alaska bear hunters have other ideas for good spot and stalk black bears? Any recommendations on charter/drop camp services? Forest Service cabins look like a good way to go as well; any recommendations there from you Alaska guys?
Any and all help would be appreciated.

Have hunted out of Ketchikan just a bit off of a friends boat in the spring on the beaches. Generally lots of action, but others on here have more knowledge of SE. I mostly hunt them where I live in Southcentral. Lots on the hills in Aug-Sept eating berries, but have to hike quite a bit. Some spots I sweat stumbling into a brownie but others I don't.

I can help you with more specific stuff in a few days if you want, as i'll be off the grid for several days, shortly.

I heard POW is a draw now, but don't quote me.  I have been there hunting once.  I also took a trip with Homer Ocean Charters and might I say having a hot meal waiting for you and a hot shower every couple of days is well worth the price.  (the price is very reasonable I might add)  If I ever go again, it will be with HOC.  There is a lot to be said about the floating hote.

POW going to a draw hunt 2012-2013.  That means this coming spring is the last time you can get OTC tags.  I'll try to help if you have quesions on POW hunting.

Most of the mainland from Juneau south is primarily black bear habitat - the Browns are on the ABC islands. Petersburg area is good.  Kuiu Island is a favorite destination of mine.  I'm not sure he is still running bear trips but check out American Dream Outfitters in Juneau.  He is a transporter - not a guide or outfitter - there is a difference under Alaska regs.  I hunted off his boat on Kuiu a few years back and had a good trip.

Follower, I really liked Petersburg when we were there. We camped on Ohmer Creek; looked like great bear habitat. That could be a good DIY area.
Thanks to all for the input.

I hunted along Nelchina 29 years ago.  Took griz and blacks up there. Been down in lesser 48 since then, but we saw many bears up along the river then
