Arrows making me crazy!
« on: July 03, 2007, 12:43:00 PM »
I just can't figure out what type of arrows I want to use with my new bow. I was gonna use aluminums because of there weight and straightness, then really want to use woodies because there more tarditional, know I'm leaning towards carbons after reading some old post about how derable they are. I guess I can shoot all of them for deffernt thing, but would like to stay with one type.

Aluminums bend but are straight, woodies are cool looking but not very derable and take to long to build, carbons derable but pricey, light have to add weight and don't look all that good.

If I do try some carbons what size should I use?
55#-57# dw 28"dl dyna97 string Viper deluxe, would like arrow around 29.5-30" would be useing 150gr to 250gr heads and insert. I've seen some guys useing .500 spine up to .340 spine for this setup, whats the right setup? Should I go buy 1 of each spine and play with them to find the right one for my setup?

Hard to argue that there is anything better than a carbon arrow.  Lots of folks like wood arrows because they are more traditional, but IMO there is nothing that will beat the straightness, durability, and consistency of carbon.  Ordinarily for your weight bow I would say you would need a Beman or Easton 500, GT 35/55, or Carbon Express 150.  However you stated you might go as high as 250gr up front, so you may need a 400, 55/75, or, 250 in those shafts.  They all offer a woodgrain shaft (Beman MFX Classic, GT Traditional, CX Heritage) which look really good IMO and add more weight.  Carbon shafts (in my experience) respond more to length changes than point weight, so you might want to try some different lenghts as well as playing with point weight.

I'm currently shooting a 340 Beman Blk Max out of my Schafer which is 68 lbs at my 29" draw with 100 grain insert and a 150 grain head, unless you have alot more weight up front, I would stay away from the 340.  I would buy 1 of each and play with them.

If you like the look of wood and want carbon try the carbon traditionals. they look like wood and with a rap or dip the look reel good. If you want wood that is (tuff) try Lam. Burch. Fred Bear shot alu. and you cant say he was not traditional. I dont shoot carbon but if I was looking for the perfect arrow I would go with the Wood grane look carbons. But its what ever you like. And dont worry about what other people think of your sit-up. The bottom line alu. wood, or carbon you still have to hit what you shoot at. My buddy tells me all the time the carbons he shoots are tuff but they lose as easy as any other arrow he ever shot. GOOD LUCK

My current setups are 55@28 hybrid longbows 29 1/4" arrow length. I shoot a 35/55 Goldtip and instead of loading the tips up with weight I pull the nocks of and stuff them with the stiff yellow poly rope and with a 150 grain broadhead brings my arrow weight to 530gr. I was just turned on to this set up from Duane @ Thunderhorn and I can't even begin to tell you how well it works. The goldtips always flew great for me but were way to light and critical. I like to have my arrow weighted some what even and not too tip heavy. The only arrows that I have ever had shoot this good is a 2016 w/125gr head and a 2018 w/150gr head. I have to tell you I have never gotten bad advise or product from Duane @ Thuderhorn.
