squirrel calls..really?
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:29:00 AM »
Help me out guys, I have a "MR squirrel call, and it either does not work correctly, OR I am not doing right, as it is ineffective. I have had those calls with the rubber bulb at one end that makes the chatter and "grunt" if you will, none of which have ever proven effective...WHAT AM I MISSING?????????????????????

What do YOU use for squirrels??

In my opinion, the squirrle calls that I have used are mainly to calm the rascal's down after they get all wound up when I miss one. That is the only time they have really worked for me while bowhunting for them. When out with other tools of the squirrle hunting trade, I have found that when you are a bit further away, if you tap on the bulb or shake the bulb a bit, while the intended quarry is not in a good position, it will sometimes get them curious enough to sit still long enough to get a shot at them or make them turn just enough to be able to get a shot at one. Again this is just my opinion when it comes to these calls. I will say that if you knock 2 50cent pieces together properly, it sounds alot like a squirrle cutting on a acorn. Dad taught me that one a long long time ago, lol.

many times Ive had squirrels 25 yards out or so come over and check me out, out of curiosity, when I give them a whole bunch of short lip squeaks....  but I haven't had a production squirrel Call ever work either.

I've used the bulb end type as a locator when I'm not seeing squirrels.

I do an alarm bark to try and raise a response. After that I'll stay put for a few minutes since I've brought attention to my location.

Gives the squirrel time to calm down. Then I can move on him.

I've also used the bark call to get a hiding squirrel to take a peek.

I've never used the Mr. Squirrel call so can't help you with that. I'm curious as to what anyone might have to say about using them, success or whatever as well.

Blow up a balloon and pull the end apart to make it squeak. I have no idea if it works on eastern squirrels but the pine squirrels in the mountains come RUNNING! My brother and I figured it out on accident when we were little kids. I have called in squirrels, coyotes, and even a weasel doing this. But LOTS of squirrels!!!!

Ive never used a manufactured call but i make a kissing noise be it on the back of my hand or just with my lips if i need one to turn around a tree on poke out. Also works well to stop them.

I just use my mouth. I can make at least 3 different squirrel sounds. One: is just your lips like kissing.(sucking in) Two:The side of you mouth sucking in with your tongue controlling the pressure. I can only do it on my left side of my mouth for some reason. The third way is to puff a pocket of air on the side of ya cheek and while keeping the air tight and blown out like a chipmunk's cheek full of nuts. I make a first with my right hand and hit the side of my cheek with the bottom side of my hand at quick successions giving their barking sound. I mainly use these sounds to get them to quit barking at me while sitting in a deer stand. There's always one that's going to bark until the sun goes down no matter what. mIKe

I usually just use my mouth to bark a little like a squirrel, to get them moving, or maybe come give me a look...

haha, yall be nice to ole Mr. Dean, he's a lot of things, but pathetic wont get ya close..

That bow he used in that video, he actually made from the plank in his eye...nobody had to tell him it was there though!

I used to use the Mr. Squirrel call a lot.  If you catch the squirrels in the right mood it can be a real hoot.  They come straight to you...and ticked off, too!  It works on the same principle as a rabbit squealer...try to sound like a squirrel being attacked.  But while a predator comes in looking for food, the squirrel comes in to scold the attacker.  I usually grabbed a small sapling and shook it while trying to sound like a panicked squirrel.  I mainly used it when hunting with a 22 pistol, but you should get shots with a bow.

Oh, another bonus from using the Mr. Squirrel is I have taken three gray foxes and a coyote while using it.
"So much do the savages esteem the wood of this tree for the purpose of making their bows, that they travel many hundred miles in quest of it."  -- Meriweather Lewis' description of the Osage Orange tree in a letter sent to Thomas Jefferson.
