Better rest option for Martin Jaguar?
« on: August 28, 2011, 12:14:00 PM »
Bought a Martin T/D jaguar. NOT crazy about the plastic flipper rest they provide. Shooting carbons with feather fletching.

I have a Martin like that too. The riser is cut way past center so there are not many choises that work on it without useing some sort of compound type rest. I have a wisker biskit on mine right now that works great but it makes the bow very compound like, lol.

I had a jaguar and tried everything from a hostage to a whisker biscuit to shooting off of the shelf. I settled on a flipper rest that is very similar to what the genesis youth bows use.

On my Hoyts I shoot a NAP CenterRest. I have one on a Gamemaster and one on a Dorado. Pretty easy to adjust, and they're tough little things. Haven't broken one yet, and I shoot a fish arrow off the Dorado.

I got a jaguar two years ago and put a flipper rest on it I got from cabelas.. found it worked very very well for me.. Im setting it up for a bowfishinbg rig now and I am going to put one of the forked drop away rests on it and see how it works.. not sure if it will work if it gets in the way of my sight picture..window whatever.. i shoot instinctive and the flipper worked great..

If you try a wisker biskit keep in mind that feathers may not last long on it, they are really made for viens. The jaguar is a nice shooting bow but the riser is almost like it was made for a compound. My boys love mine. They thought compounds were the only bow there was till they tried the martin, now they fight over it.

I have heard that they are left over compound risers. With the factory plastic rest I get amazing arrow flight with a 3555 but consistantly hit about 4-6 inches to the left. I shoot more verticaly with this bow than I do my widow.

This bow is 40 @ 28 and seems to be plenty quick!

I had an old bear whitetail 2  compound in the closet that i took the riser off this morning and the Martin limbs will bolt right up on it.It makes the bow about two inches longer so i will have to get a diffrent string for it but the angle where the limbs mount look right. The whitetail riser has a much better handle shape for me and is not radical looking like the martin riser. It looks very much like a bear take down recurve actually.

Way, way back in the 80s, my dad worked for Martin Archery in Research and Development.

I was slowing transitioning to traditional bows, and my last compound finally ended up with a wooden arrow rest that I carved to the shape of a perfect recurve arrow rest and epoxied to the metal riser of the Martin Cougar magnum. This allowed me to have a radiused shelf and perfect center shot.

It was really simple to make, and my arrows flew like darts our of it.

With a tiny bit of experimenting (use a simple piece of pine to experiment with) and a decision of how close to center cut you want to be, you can make one. For the final product, go with a nice piece of hardwood. If it's a fancy looking piece of hardwood like Bocote or Bubinga, so much the better.

Martin offers an adjustable rest mount. I use one on my Hoyt Dorado. I simply adjusted the centershot and stuck a leather sideplate on it. They are available at 3 rivers. I get perfect flight shooting off the shelf.
