bear grizzly setup?
« on: August 30, 2011, 03:39:00 PM »
I just purchased an old bear grizzly from my local archery shop for what I think is a great price,  100$ !!!  anyhow took it home and played with it a bit and it seems to like a 7 3/4" brace height, any other recommendation?  I did not have a lot of time to shoot but it really quieted down when I twisted it up to that.  Also the bow is  45 @ 28 and I wanted to see if anybody had suggestions as to arrow choice?  carbon preferably, I make a mess out of aluminum in short order. My arrows are sorted out for my 53 lb longbow and I think they are a little stiff on spine,  any help would be great,  the bow has the usual amo markings but is numbered kr41421 above those.  any ideas as to year?  It appears to be maybe rosewood with a maple strip?  just guessing, but really in overall good shape and I shot some really nice groups even with poorly matched arrows so very interested in getting it set up right,  The custom longbow may stay home this year on opening day!

Matt,

Sounds like a 1970 based on your description of the maple stripe and the serial #.  I am guessing it is 56" AMO.  If so, then it's 1970.  If it's 58" AMO then you'll need to post pics.  If that's not possible just mail it to me    :)

Anyway, I have not had the opportunity to shoot the 56" Grizzlies (years 1968 - 1970).  My 58" Grizzlies in that weight range really like GT3555's at full length, point weight is your discretion, but 145gr works good for me and allows you to assume you'd use a Bear Greenie broadhead and put you right around 10GPP.

Love them Grizzlies!!

Congrats on the find by the way!

I'd try some long Gold Tip 3555's with a little weight up front.  I have an old 50# Grizzly that likes them alot.

ceme 24 yes it is a 56".  Sounds like a  70 model then,  thanks much. I think I may be able to rustle up a 3555. thanks much for the info, any other suggestions feel free to chime in fellas, I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me over the last year or so. I am really surprised how well and how smooth a 41 year old bow shoots!  My arrows are admittedly overspined and most shots were well within a 6" circle at 20 yds, any outside of that were strictly my fault.  Ceme 24 what is proper brace height for that year?  thanks again,  TF

Definitely a 1970 Mr. Fudd.  The "K" serial numbers started in 1970 and the maple stripe was also only in 1970.

I am not sure on brace.  I am sure someone here will be more familiar, but I would expect it to be like most old bears and be between 7.5" - 8.5" depending on your draw and set up.

I have heard good things about the 56" models.  I look forward to owning one some day.
