"white glove strategy" anyone tried?
« on: August 30, 2011, 10:39:00 PM »
Just put down a hunting magazine and one of the featured articles was the description of this whitetail bowhunter's trick... When stalking and trying to close the distance or even attracting deer to within range he had been experimenting with using a simple white glove to mimic the whitetail of deer and calming feeding deer enough to get within range of them. Just popping it lightly ever so often as they do when calm and feeding gave him success.
I seems to make sense and sure got me interested...
Anyone out there have any experience or thoughts on this?

Have hung a white feather on a plot or trail, where it can twitch in the wind.  In fact I think its called a Twitchit.  Works basically the same as you're talking about.
It does help.

Not to sidetrack your thread, but my calming of the deer trick when they get alarmed is clucking softly like a turkey. They know if a turkey is near all is well. It really works well.

I suppose the tail flicker my help.

Never tried the glove thing but I do cluck like a turkey. I even thought about putting a turkey decoy in the tree with me when the leaves start falling.

I've used white socks for drag rags and tied them to bushes to give that extra "tail" visual. Seems to work sometimes. Deer are curious.

Terry, it's happened. When I was in school in Maine a woman wearing white gloves was shot dead hanging laundry in her back yard by a rifle hunter who mistook her for a deer. Ironic how a tail shooter can kill a woman dead with one shot but miss or wound nine out of ten deer he shoots at.

I remember that incident. It changed the law on hunting "accidents."

Remember thinking what a fool the guy was.

Be very careful with that. When I took the IBEP course several years ago. That was the very thing that got a man to shoot his brother.

Haven't tried the white glove trick but believe it could be productive under the right conditions.

Have used a turkey fan when stalking in the spring. All I can say is that in certain situations, with confidence, is that I was able to get closer.

There are many forgotten tricks, current tricks or future tricks which may be viable. My uncle from years back was a smoke pole hunter. He harvested several deer by setting out a transistor radio set on classical station with the volume turned down low. The deer would routinely come to investigate the sound and some were w/i mere steps of the radio when he fired.

I've never hunted whitetails but it seems like it would attract the deers attention. That's what I usually try to avoid. Gary
