Should have posted a big thanks to Mark Lippe for hooking me up on short notice for a hog hunt at the Bartush Land & Cattle Company sooner than this. Not just for the hookup but also for taking me around this 3200 acre hunk of land and supplying food, beverages and company on my short stay.
Saw some sign and bumped a sow but the closest I got to a pig was the sow's piglets. Tough hunt in that heat and I heard it got even hotter after I left. Dry heat my backside! 105 is 105!
Did manage a few gar in the Red River though and really enjoyed the time off. Had the weekend off during a business trip.
Some pics...
One of several watering holes scouted.
Heard something crashing thru the woods and this little guy popped out, started running toward me, locked up the brakes ala Bambi on ice and we had a staring contest for a good 5 minutes until the wind swirled.
Red River looking really low.
Wanted to hunt the other side of this but the wind was wrong. Setup under an oak near a trail from the woods to the water. After about an hour I heard some movement. I waited another hour and then it got so hot I decided to make a stalk rather than wait much more.
Took me about 40 minutes to cover the distance but I made my very first successful stalk... on a 'dilla that is.
Slammer and an unused arrow.
Again, thanks Mark. While no hogs were taken it was still a good time and I plan to come back when the weather isn't above 100 degrees.
