Hey Hudson Valley, NY.. Where are the Fawns?!?!

Usually by now the fawns are old enough to keep up with their mothers. But, I am just not seeing any! Seeing lot's of does but no fawns. I should have put two and two together one morning last week. I went out at 5:30 Am to walk the dog like I always do and in the creek behind the house about 75 to 100 yards in from the road a coyote howled. Startled me for a second. But, use to them being around the area. And hour or so later there is a mature doe in my yard looking and walking around and refusing to leave the area. I guess ol' Wile E... had veal for breakfast. Anyway,, any one else notice an absence of fawns or is it just me.

Hi Steve!!!!! Funny you should post this today LOL!!!!!

I got up about 6am this morning to start the coffee pot and I looked out the kitchen window.....

(and at first I thought "how did Kevin's dog get out" LOL)

after a second look,there were 2 small fawns and a doe in my back yard. The little ones were REAL interested in my 3-D Buck target (are you my Dad?????) They hung around for about a half hour.

I don't know how long they'll last with the coyotes,but if they stay around the house they should be OK. The coyotes don't like Kevins dog.She will stand and fight,but she won't chase them. BTW,If they choose to stay and fight with her they will soon be attracting lead.

I hope they stay around,we like watching them

Hey Steve, is that deli still over in the old rail station?  One of my hunting buds used to work at Norrie Point and we would get lunch there on occasion.  That place was good!

Not only have I seen quite a few fawns both here and at IBM....I have a bunch of young poults running around with their mother. When I get this backyard brush hogged, I should start to see the animals on a daily basis minus the 5 ft high hay.

On July 4 about 6:30AM, I was returning home from my overnight shift on the volunteer ambulance. I spotted a doe standing in a brushy field and noticed a fawn running around the doe. Since there was no traffic, I pulled over to watch the show. The fawn seemed to be playing and running around. The fawn suddenly took off to the far side of the field then came racing back to the near side and stopped just short of the road. I was amazed how fast the fawn covered the 400 or so yards. There was no doubt in my mind that the fawn could keep up with the adults, at lest for short bursts.  I dicided to have some fun talking to the fawn. I made a few soft doe calls. The fawn has already learned some of the moves. It started head bobbing and foot stomping trying to figure why a GMC pickup sounded like a doe. It stood there for a moment then took off back to the doe. Once I looked back out in the field, I saw three other does that must have been attracted to my calls. I am pretty sure the fawn will be able to elude the predators at this point. I hope it does as well with the thousands of cars & trucks that drive past his playground each day.

I have seen quite few this year but the coyotes are still hurting the pop. big time. I spoke to a guy from ENCON and he said they now figure the coyote kill at least 50% of the deer before they reach 6 months. Shawn

Not as many as in years past, the 'yote's are real bad here in the Orange Co. Montgomery/Pine Bush area. After every deer season we hunt them but to put the hurting on them we are going year round now, got this one the other day, big azz alfa male.
